Oil already sits inside the sesame seed, and in that same way the Lord is already within, spread through every place. The fools addressed here still swing and sway, as if he were elsewhere. The test that follows is domestic and hard. A snatching dog's tail keeps its crook; if that nature can be spoiled, the generous light can be seen, and that seeing is called the truth. Sight is tied to a changed habit, not to a new opinion about God.

The teaching

Using the classic Indian philosophical metaphor of oil invisibly pervading every grain of sesame (எள்ளகத்தில் எண்ணெய்), Sivavakkiyar affirms that the Supreme Lord is utterly omnipresent, intimately seated within the sanctum of the human heart. Yet foolish seekers swing back and forth like agitated pendulums, endlessly running to distant pilgrimage sites and temples while ignoring the indwelling presence. To diagnose their spiritual blindness, the Siddha uses a rustic folk image: the proverbial crooked tail of a scavenging dog. The crooked tail symbolizes the incorrigible, grasping mind and the deep-seated vasanas (habitual tendencies) that perpetually bend consciousness toward external duality and worldly craving. Only if a seeker can break and eradicate this stubborn, crooked nature of the mind will the boundless, self-giving Light of Divine Grace (வள்ளலாகி நின்ற சோதி) spontaneously shine forth as the ultimate Reality.

Wanting knowledge and loving a book are treated as one mistake. People point into the book and announce that the support is there, yet they neither take hold of it nor let the claim go. The support this song names is a single pillar, the root channel, and it is to be searched inside one's own body. Apart from that seeing, everything else is set level with the muddle of a dream. A page is allowed no separate authority once the inner pillar has been named.

The teaching

A scathing critique of bookish scholars who passionately hoard manuscripts and treatises, claiming that the immovable cosmic pillar of Truth (தாணு / Sthanu / Shiva) is captured within written pages. In their intellectual obsession, they can neither truly assimilate what they read nor let go of their theoretical vanity. Sivavakkiyar redirects their gaze from the palm-leaf manuscript to the human spine: the true cosmic pillar is the central spinal channel (மூலநாடி / Sushumna nadi) vibrating within one's own living body. Unless a practitioner explores this internal axis through meditative awakening and perceives the Supreme indwelling light, all scriptural learning, metaphysical debates, and external philosophies remain nothing more than the confused, illusory ramblings of a dream (கனாமயக்கம்).

Verse 405

Customary talk and inward pining are set side by side, and the hearers are called mute. A grain measure carries the argument. Speaking of a nazhi as if it existed without the ulakku is an empty boast, while four ulakku are what make a nazhi, and that same reckoning is said to hold inside the person. Talking in the old way does not locate anyone. The close puts the Lord in the mind, the very place the talking has been used to avoid.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar takes aim at dogmatic religionists who parrot conventional scriptural phrases and customary sectarian arguments (வழக்கு) while their own inner minds starve in spiritual agony and confusion. He exposes the absurdity of their pretensions through a sharp grain-measure analogy: claiming to possess the full measure of liberation (the Nazhi) without having realized its foundational parts (the Ulakku) is the babble of the spiritually mute. In the internal mathematics of the Siddhas, the full measure of divine realization is built upon integrating the four quarters—the four states of consciousness (waking, dream, deep sleep, and the transcendent Turiya) or the progressive inner stages of realization. The eternal Lord (ஈசன்) does not dwell in conventional disputes or sectarian dogmas; He is permanently established (மன்னும்) in the purified, tranquil space of the inward mind.

Verse 406

Letter by letter, the hall is identified with sounds people already recite. The letter A is the hall, and so is what has no beginning. U is the hall, and so is what is true. Ma is the hall, and so is whatever has taken form. Si is the hall, and what has become clear is Sivaya. No building is indicated. The beginningless, the true, and form itself are folded into the same hall, and the mantra's clarity is what those letters were for.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar demystifies the sacred "Ambalam"—the golden cosmic dance hall usually associated with the temple of Chidambaram—by revealing it as the subtle phonetic and energetic anatomy of the Panchakshara: The primal letter 'A' (அகாரம்) is the Ambalam, representing the beginningless, uncreated Absolute (அனாதி). The letter 'U' (உகாரம்) is the Ambalam, representing the unshakeable Truth (உண்மை) and the vibrant presence of Kundalini Shakti. The letter 'Ma' (மகாரம்) is the Ambalam, manifesting as all created form (வடிவு) and cosmic embodiment. The sacred letter 'Si' (சிகாரம்) is the Ambalam of pure transcendent Consciousness; when integrated, the entire vibrational matrix clarifies as Sivaya (சிவாயமே). The true cosmic dancing arena is neither stone nor wood; it is the expansive expanse of Consciousness within the mystic's own being where Shiva performs His eternal dance.

Verse 407

The picture is a machine in motion. A wheel flies and runs, a plank rides above it, and oil dances in the press. A vital wind and fire join that motion. Light mixes into the heat, and enjoyments mix with it. Then the song asks how that movement went once it entered the passage. The printed lines are compressed, and the names of the wind and the passage stay technical. The question is about a course through the body, not about a cart on a road.

The teaching

A masterful depiction of Siddha Kundalini and Vasi yoga using the dynamic mechanical imagery of an oil-press. The body is an energetic engine in motion: the psychic wheels (chakras) spin rapidly beneath the central spinal plank (Sushumna), while the subtle vital winds (Singu vayu) and the awakened internal fire of Kundalini (தேயு) churn and swirl like oil being pressed from seed. As the blazing heat of Kundalini merges with pure transcendent light (ஒளிக்கலந்து), all temporal dualities and worldly desires dissolve into cosmic harmony. When this unified current of fire, air, and light breaches the subtle crown aperture (புக்கில் / Brahmarandhra), the mystic's individual identity dissolves into the boundless void of the Absolute, leaving ordinary mortal boundaries forever behind.

Verse 408

The breast that grew and rose is the test. Hearers are told they have already decided it is illusion, and the song will not accept that dismissal. The body of a living being who has received grace is what they are to know in the true interior. Hearing is the condition. If the wave of words from those in whom shining knowledge rests is actually heard, thought comes and enters a heart that has lost its stain. The body is the place that thought enters.

The teaching

Orthodox ascetics often display a hypocritical revulsion toward the feminine, condemning the physical body and maternal breast (வளர்ந்தெழுந்த கொங்கை) as vile, binding illusion (மாயம்). Sivavakkiyar vehemently dismantles this misogynistic orthodoxy, insisting that the physical human form, nourished at the mother's breast, is a sacred vessel sanctified by divine grace Rather than indulging in superficial bodily condemnation or external mortifications, seekers must heed the words of truly enlightened sages who perceive the divine reality within. When genuine wisdom is received and embraced, the heart is cleansed of all moralistic stains and judgmental impurities (களங்கம்), allowing pure spiritual perception to enter and abide within the core of one's being.
