Three stones are accused in turn. The stone that has sound in it is broken and made into two. The stone set in the doorway is trodden until it goes blunt. The stone kept for worship is heaped with flowers and water. Then one question: which stone is the stone the Lord finds dear? Say it. The verse does not answer with a fourth, holier stone. It leaves the hearer holding the question, after breaking, treading, and offering have all been shown as ways of missing him.
The teaching
One of Sivavakkiyar's most famous and devastating iconoclastic verses, exposing the absurdity of idol worship. A single piece of resonant stone is quarried and split into two halves. One half is laid down as a threshold at the temple door, where hundreds of feet trample it into bluntness every day. The other half is sculpted into a deity, installed in the sanctum, and showered with water, milk, and flowers. Sivavakkiyar confronts the ritualist with a razor-sharp question: which of these two stones is actually dear to the Lord? Both are mere inert mineral rock. The Lord has no favoritism for carved granite over a paving slab; He abides exclusively as living Consciousness within the human heart, completely untouched by stone-worship.
