Three stones are accused in turn. The stone that has sound in it is broken and made into two. The stone set in the doorway is trodden until it goes blunt. The stone kept for worship is heaped with flowers and water. Then one question: which stone is the stone the Lord finds dear? Say it. The verse does not answer with a fourth, holier stone. It leaves the hearer holding the question, after breaking, treading, and offering have all been shown as ways of missing him.

The teaching

One of Sivavakkiyar's most famous and devastating iconoclastic verses, exposing the absurdity of idol worship. A single piece of resonant stone is quarried and split into two halves. One half is laid down as a threshold at the temple door, where hundreds of feet trample it into bluntness every day. The other half is sculpted into a deity, installed in the sanctum, and showered with water, milk, and flowers. Sivavakkiyar confronts the ritualist with a razor-sharp question: which of these two stones is actually dear to the Lord? Both are mere inert mineral rock. The Lord has no favoritism for carved granite over a paving slab; He abides exclusively as living Consciousness within the human heart, completely untouched by stone-worship.

Verse 425

  1. 1Ottuvaiththuk kattiniir upaayamaana mandhiram
  2. 2Kattupatta podhilum karuththanangu vaazhumo?
  3. 3Ettum ettum ettulee iyanguginra vaayuvai
  4. 4Vattamitta yavvilee vaiththunarndhu paarumee.

A mantra is handled as a device. A tile is set, a tie is made, and the charm is called a means. Does the inner meaning live there just because the binding was done? The alternative is a breath and a letter. The wind that moves inside eight and eight and eight is placed in the letter ya, a circle drawn on it, then known and seen. Tying a charm and setting that wind in a letter are different acts. Only the second is worth a look.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a stinging critique of magical talismanic occultism, mechanical yantras, and superstitious charms Sorcerers, astrologers, and ritualists inscribe mantras on metal foils or clay tiles and tie them in amulets, believing they have captured divine power in an object. The Siddha poses a devastating question: even if you succeed in binding the talisman with intricate knots, will the conscious Supreme Lord (கருத்தன்) ever agree to inhabit your string and tile? Authentic spiritual power is attained not through external amulets, but through the inner alchemy of Vasi yoga. The practitioner must redirect the vital breath (வாயு) circulating through the twenty-four cosmic principles (the three sets of eight tattvas / எட்டும் எட்டும் எட்டுளே) and focus it into the sacred seed-letter 'Ya' enclosed within the circle of awareness (வட்டம் இட்ட யவ் / the heart lotus and the individual soul / Jiva in the Panchakshara). By concentrating the breath within this inner seed, the living presence of the Lord is directly realized.

Verse 426

  1. 1Indhauuril illai enru engunaadi oduriir?
  2. 2Andhauuriliisanum amarndhu vaazhvadhu engnganee?
  3. 3Andhamaana pondhilaaril meevininra naadhanai
  4. 4Andhamaana siiyilavvil arindhunarndhu kollumee.

Pilgrimage is mocked in the language of towns. He is not in this town, you say, and you run off searching. How would the Lord sit and live in that other town? The Nada to be known abides in an inner course the print calls the river of the limit's hollow, a compressed phrase. In that limit one is told to understand and realize. Travel between places is the error. The end, the hollow stream, and a letter are the location this song will give.

The teaching

A satirical exposure of the delusion of external pilgrimage. Restless seekers abandon their own homes and hearths, running frantically from town to town under the delusion that God is absent in their native place and resides exclusively in some distant holy shrine. Sivavakkiyar asks with razor-sharp irony: if the Supreme Lord does not abide right where you are, how could He possibly sit and dwell confined to that other town? The Divine Sovereign (நாதன்) does not inhabit stone sanctuaries across geographical borders; He abides within the "river of the body's hollow" (பொந்தில் ஆறு)—the flowing current of prana surging through the central cavity of the spinal column (Sushumna). By realizing the subtle, unstruck resonance (Nada) within the esoteric seed syllables 'Si' and 'A' (சீயில் அவ்வில்) at the summit of the breath, the seeker discovers the ultimate holy shrine right within their own body.

Verse 427

  1. 1Pukkirundha thummulee puuriyitta thoththiram
  2. 2Thokkusatsu singuvai aakkiraanan suuzhndhidil
  3. 3Akkumaniyum konraisuudi ambalaththul aaduvaar
  4. 4Mikkasodhi anpudan vilambidaadhu pinnaiyee.

The printed verse is tightly packed, and the second line in particular does not settle into a clean grammar. A hymn with an offering placed on it is located inside those who have entered. If a maker surrounds what the line joins as sat-chu and the cinku, then the one who wears the bead and the kondrai garland will dance in the hall. The surpassing light, with love, is not something to be declared afterward. Outward praise and an inward surrounding are being distinguished, even where the wording stays obscure.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar teaches that vocal hymns, scripted liturgies, and ritual offerings (தோத்திரம்) remain superficial noise until the practitioner achieves the inward withdrawal of the senses (Pratyahara). The verse explicitly enumerates the sensory faculties: touch and skin (தொக்கு / tvak), sight and eyes (சட்சு / chakshu), taste and tongue (சிங்குவை / jihva), and smell and nose (ஆக்கிராணம் / ghrana). When these outgoing sensory gates are gathered and enclosed within the meditative sanctuary of consciousness (உம்முளே சூழ்ந்திடில்), the Supreme Dancer—adorned with wild Kondrai blossoms and sacred Rudraksha beads (அக்குமணி)—performs His ecstatic dance of bliss in the heart's inner Chidambaram. In that profound interior stillness, the surpassing Radiance of Grace (மிக்க சோதி) reveals Itself spontaneously through silent, melting love, far beyond the reach of verbal recitations.

Verse 428

  1. 1Pinnezhundha maangisaththaip peedhaiyar kanpatriyee
  2. 2Pinpumaangi saththinaal pogamaaygai panninaal
  3. 3Thunpurum vinaigaldhaam suuzhndhidumbin enralo
  4. 4Anparaay irundhapeergal aaruniindhal polviidee.

Fools fix their eyes on flesh that arose later. If the hand is then turned to enjoyment by the power of that flesh, deeds that bring suffering gather afterward. The closing question is compressed, but it does not treat that gathering as the end. For those who remained lovers, release is like swimming a river, a crossing rather than a doctrine. Eye and hand spent on flesh collect painful karma. Love is the way that can cross.

The teaching

A profound psychological and spiritual diagnosis of carnal delusion and karmic causality. Immature souls (பேதையர்) fixate their gaze upon mortal flesh (மாங்கிசம்), which only arose later in the transient womb, and allow themselves to be swept away by lustful indulgence and sensory illusion (போக மாய்கை). Such physical fixation inevitably binds consciousness in a web of agonizing karmic consequences (துன்புறும் வினைகள்). Yet Sivavakkiyar does not preach morbid despair or puritanical self-hatred. For those who transmute desire into ecstatic, selfless love for the Divine (அன்பராய் இருந்தபேர்கள்), crossing the turbulent ocean of worldly existence is as natural, graceful, and triumphant as an expert swimmer gliding across a flowing river (ஆறு நீந்தல் போல்). Divine love becomes the buoyant spiritual vessel that effortlessly carries the soul across the waters of samsara to eternal liberation (வீடு).

Verse 429

  1. 1Vittirundha thummulee visanamatru irukkiriir
  2. 2Kattivaiththa vaasalmuunru kaatsiyaana vaasalonru
  3. 3Kattivaiththa vaasalum kadhavudhaal thirandhupoyth
  4. 4Thittamaana iisanaith theliyumaang kisaththulee.

You remain without sorrow inside what you have left, and the song does not admire that calm. Three doorways were built and set. One doorway is the vision itself. Open the built door and its bar, and go. In the flesh, so the line says, the Lord who is firmly real may be known clearly. Comfort beyond the gates is what gets disturbed. The gate that matters is a seeing, and its place is the body.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar warns against spiritual complacency and false equanimity. Seekers often withdraw into a dull, passive quietude, congratulating themselves that they are detached and free from sorrow (விசனமற்று இருக்கிறீர்), while remaining completely ignorant of the higher dimensions of consciousness. The Siddha outlines the subtle architecture of the human organism: there are three lower, binding portals (the three psychic knots or granthis—Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra granthis) and one supreme, luminous portal of transcendent vision (the Brahmarandhra / Sahasrara). The spiritual aspirant must not remain idle; they must actively unlock the latches of the lower gates through the upward fire of Kundalini and enter the supreme gateway of vision. Within this very mortal vessel of living flesh (மாங்கிசத்துளே), the unshakeable reality of Ishvara must be directly perceived and experienced.
