Fools fix their eyes on flesh that arose later. If the hand is then turned to enjoyment by the power of that flesh, deeds that bring suffering gather afterward. The closing question is compressed, but it does not treat that gathering as the end. For those who remained lovers, release is like swimming a river, a crossing rather than a doctrine. Eye and hand spent on flesh collect painful karma. Love is the way that can cross.

The teaching

A profound psychological and spiritual diagnosis of carnal delusion and karmic causality. Immature souls (பேதையர்) fixate their gaze upon mortal flesh (மாங்கிசம்), which only arose later in the transient womb, and allow themselves to be swept away by lustful indulgence and sensory illusion (போக மாய்கை). Such physical fixation inevitably binds consciousness in a web of agonizing karmic consequences (துன்புறும் வினைகள்). Yet Sivavakkiyar does not preach morbid despair or puritanical self-hatred. For those who transmute desire into ecstatic, selfless love for the Divine (அன்பராய் இருந்தபேர்கள்), crossing the turbulent ocean of worldly existence is as natural, graceful, and triumphant as an expert swimmer gliding across a flowing river (ஆறு நீந்தல் போல்). Divine love becomes the buoyant spiritual vessel that effortlessly carries the soul across the waters of samsara to eternal liberation (வீடு).

Verse 429

  1. 1Vittirundha thummulee visanamatru irukkiriir
  2. 2Kattivaiththa vaasalmuunru kaatsiyaana vaasalonru
  3. 3Kattivaiththa vaasalum kadhavudhaal thirandhupoyth
  4. 4Thittamaana iisanaith theliyumaang kisaththulee.

You remain without sorrow inside what you have left, and the song does not admire that calm. Three doorways were built and set. One doorway is the vision itself. Open the built door and its bar, and go. In the flesh, so the line says, the Lord who is firmly real may be known clearly. Comfort beyond the gates is what gets disturbed. The gate that matters is a seeing, and its place is the body.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar warns against spiritual complacency and false equanimity. Seekers often withdraw into a dull, passive quietude, congratulating themselves that they are detached and free from sorrow (விசனமற்று இருக்கிறீர்), while remaining completely ignorant of the higher dimensions of consciousness. The Siddha outlines the subtle architecture of the human organism: there are three lower, binding portals (the three psychic knots or granthis—Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra granthis) and one supreme, luminous portal of transcendent vision (the Brahmarandhra / Sahasrara). The spiritual aspirant must not remain idle; they must actively unlock the latches of the lower gates through the upward fire of Kundalini and enter the supreme gateway of vision. Within this very mortal vessel of living flesh (மாங்கிசத்துளே), the unshakeable reality of Ishvara must be directly perceived and experienced.

Verse 430

Certainty is sung three times: it will be, that beginningless Thing. The condition is the ability to seek the One's feet again and again and to stand there praising. Then one may live as a child of Uma, whose speech is joined with sweetness. The last line turns, and the gloss gives வாகு as strength. With that strength you weary yourselves over water and fire. The joining verb in the line is compressed. Life as Uma's child is what is offered. Element-work done in one's own power is the grief.

The teaching

A triumphant and emphatic declaration of spiritual attainment: union with the Beginningless Absolute is an absolute, guaranteed reality If the seeker continually seeks the lotus feet of the Non-Dual Lord and abides in unbroken, loving contemplation, they attain the sublime status of being a cherished child of the Divine Mother Uma (பாகு சேர் மொழி உமைக்குப் பாலனாகி வாழலாம்), cradled in transcendental grace. Sivavakkiyar cautions practitioners against the agonies of harsh, brute-force Hatha yogic mortifications—straining and exhausting themselves over external elements of water and fire. Liberation is not won through violent self-punishment or mechanical elemental battles, but through childlike surrender, heart-centered love, and natural alignment with the Divine Mother's living presence.

Verse 431

The wish to become a child is taken up and given conditions. Devotion has to ripen. Of the four paths that exist, the two held in mind come next, and that nearness is why the work can proceed. Fire is kindled in the root channel, that water is drunk, and through the woman whose hair is fragrant with cardamom one reaches the Lord's feet. Child, paths, fire, drink, and the inner woman are one sequence. The feet are the end of it.

The teaching

To become the immortal spiritual child of the Divine Mother, devotion cannot remain a casual sentiment; it must ripen into complete spiritual maturity (பத்தி முற்றும்). Of the four classical Saiva paths (Charya, Kriya, Yoga, Jnana), the seeker must unite the culminating two: internal Yoga and experiential Wisdom (Jnana). The esoteric alchemical process is explicitly mapped: the yogi must kindle the blazing fire of Kundalini (வன்னி மூட்டி) in the root channel (மூலநாடி / Muladhara) and drink the descending ambrosial nectar of immortality (நீர் உண / amrita) that flows from the crown. Ascending through the subtle spinal channel of the Cardamom-Fragrant Divine Mother Shakti (ஏலவார் குழலி / Sushumna), the practitioner effortlessly attains the supreme feet of Ishvara.

Verse 432

The Project Madurai table prints this gloss beside verse 433. It explains a word in this song:

If you can reach the you addressed here, bow with love, and praise, then inside the truth that arrives, birth and death are taken away. The gloss is specific. பங்கன் is the one who has Parvati on his left side. That Pangan of kohl-bright eyes rises in the sky of the breath, and the harsh deeds done before scatter. The verse calls this certain. Love and praise are not ornaments on a life that continues as it was. They are the condition under which old karma breaks up.

The teaching

When the seeker surrenders to the indwelling Self with tender, melting devotion, the dawn of Truth completely obliterates the recurring agony of birth and death. The Ardhanarishvara—the Supreme Lord who shares His divine form with the radiant, dark-eyed Mother (மை இலங்கு கண்ணி பங்கன்)—ascends through the ethereal expanse of the breath (வாசி வான் / the subtle sky of Sushumna). As this divine union is consummated in the celestial space of the crown, all ancient, stubborn karmic impressions (செய்த வல்வினைகள்) are shattered to dust like morning mists scattered by a hurricane. Sivavakkiyar assures the practitioner that this internal spiritual transmutation is not a myth or a wish, but an unshakeable, absolute certainty (திண்ணமே).

Verse 433

  1. 1Thinnam enru seedhisonna sevviyorgal keenmino
  2. 2Annal anpulanpurugi arindhu nokkalaayidum
  3. 3Mannum adhiravinnum adhiravaasiyai nadaththidil
  4. 4Nanniengal iisanum namadhugadalil iruppanee.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 433, this gloss explains a word in verse 432:

The certainty just spoken is now called news, and the worthy are told to hear it. The great one melts in the love inside love, and knowing and seeing come to be. The gloss gives வாசி as wind. If that breath is led so earth shakes and sky shakes, our Lord draws near and is in our ocean. The scale is bodily and cosmic together. A conducted wind moves soil and heaven, and he is then in an inner sea.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar addresses mature, spiritually ripe seekers (செவ்வியோர்கள்), sharing the certain tidings of realization. When the heart melts in that tender love that deepens within love itself, direct spiritual discernment awakens. He then reveals the cosmic potency of Vasi yoga: when the subtle breath (வாசி) is harmonized and conducted through the central Sushumna with such vibrational power that it reverberates through the earth (Muladhara) and the heavens (Sahasrara), the Supreme Lord instantly draws near. He takes up His eternal residence within "our ocean" (நமது கடல்)—the boundless inner sea of consciousness within the heart's sanctum, merging individual awareness with cosmic totality.
