If you can reach the you addressed here, bow with love, and praise, then inside the truth that arrives, birth and death are taken away. The gloss is specific. பங்கன் is the one who has Parvati on his left side. That Pangan of kohl-bright eyes rises in the sky of the breath, and the harsh deeds done before scatter. The verse calls this certain. Love and praise are not ornaments on a life that continues as it was. They are the condition under which old karma breaks up.

The teaching

When the seeker surrenders to the indwelling Self with tender, melting devotion, the dawn of Truth completely obliterates the recurring agony of birth and death. The Ardhanarishvara—the Supreme Lord who shares His divine form with the radiant, dark-eyed Mother (மை இலங்கு கண்ணி பங்கன்)—ascends through the ethereal expanse of the breath (வாசி வான் / the subtle sky of Sushumna). As this divine union is consummated in the celestial space of the crown, all ancient, stubborn karmic impressions (செய்த வல்வினைகள்) are shattered to dust like morning mists scattered by a hurricane. Sivavakkiyar assures the practitioner that this internal spiritual transmutation is not a myth or a wish, but an unshakeable, absolute certainty (திண்ணமே).

Verse 433

  1. 1Thinnam enru seedhisonna sevviyorgal keenmino
  2. 2Annal anpulanpurugi arindhu nokkalaayidum
  3. 3Mannum adhiravinnum adhiravaasiyai nadaththidil
  4. 4Nanniengal iisanum namadhugadalil iruppanee.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 433, this gloss explains a word in verse 432:

The certainty just spoken is now called news, and the worthy are told to hear it. The great one melts in the love inside love, and knowing and seeing come to be. The gloss gives வாசி as wind. If that breath is led so earth shakes and sky shakes, our Lord draws near and is in our ocean. The scale is bodily and cosmic together. A conducted wind moves soil and heaven, and he is then in an inner sea.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar addresses mature, spiritually ripe seekers (செவ்வியோர்கள்), sharing the certain tidings of realization. When the heart melts in that tender love that deepens within love itself, direct spiritual discernment awakens. He then reveals the cosmic potency of Vasi yoga: when the subtle breath (வாசி) is harmonized and conducted through the central Sushumna with such vibrational power that it reverberates through the earth (Muladhara) and the heavens (Sahasrara), the Supreme Lord instantly draws near. He takes up His eternal residence within "our ocean" (நமது கடல்)—the boundless inner sea of consciousness within the heart's sanctum, merging individual awareness with cosmic totality.

Verse 434

  1. 1Iruppan ettettuennilee irundhuveera thaaguvan
  2. 2Neruppavaayu niirumannum niilvisumbum aaguvan
  3. 3Karuppugundhu kaalamee kalandhasodhi naadhanaik
  4. 4Kuruppunalil muuzhginaar kuriththunarndhu kolvaree.

He stands in the count of eight times eight, and from being there he becomes other. He becomes fire, wind, water, earth, and the long sky. When darkness entered, the lord of the mixed light is named. Those who plunged in the dark water will mark him and know. Number and element do not thin him out into the world. They are ways he becomes. The knowing belongs to people who went into the dark stream.

The teaching

The Supreme Lord permeates the sixty-four traditional arts, principles, and tattvas (எட்டெட்டு எண் = 64), yet remains completely transcendent and distinct from all of them (இருந்து வேறதாகுவன்). He manifests as the five cosmic elements—fire, wind, water, earth, and the infinite ether—and enters the dark, unmanifest womb of creation as the uncreated, self-luminous Master of Time and Light This non-dual omnipresence cannot be perceived by superficial intellects. Only those mystics who take the sacred plunge into the "waters of the Guru" (குருப்புனல் / the sanctifying stream of the Guru's grace and the descending nectar of Sahasrara) can truly discern, realize, and embody the supreme Lord.

Verse 435

  1. 1Kolluvaargal sindhaiyil kurippunarndha gnaanigal
  2. 2Alluvaargal pakkuvaththil veendi veendi eeththinaal
  3. 3Ullumaayp purambumaam unarvadharku unarvumaayth
  4. 4Thellidhaaga ninrasodhi semmaiyaith thelindhidee.

Knowers who have caught the inner sign take it up in the mind. In ripeness they gather it, if praise is done with want upon want. What stands there is inside and outside, and it is the awareness by which anything is known. The close asks you to become clear about the rightness of the light that stood bright. Wanting, praising, and a mind that keeps a sign are the method. Clarity about that light is the aim.

The teaching

Enlightened Jnanis perceive the subtle esoteric cipher (குறிப்பு) within their inward awareness and scoop up the boundless nectar of wisdom when spiritual ripeness is reached through intense, yearning adoration. The Supreme is neither exclusively immanent nor solely transcendent; He is simultaneously the inner reality, the outer universe, and most profoundly, the very Awareness by which awareness itself knows (உணர்வதற்கு உணர்வுமாய்—the ultimate Witness). Sivavakkiyar urges the seeker to awaken to the pristine clarity, beauty, and perfection of this self-luminous Light (தெள்ளிதாக நின்ற சோதி) that shines unobstructed within the purified heart.

Four clear practices are matched with four fruits, in the old order of the paths. Good conduct, chariya, takes one on to saloka, the same world. Good rite and worship, kriya, may join one to samipya, nearness. Good yoga may join one to sarupa, likeness of form. Clear knowledge, among the four, may join one to sayujya, union. The verse does not collapse the four into one slogan. It keeps each path's fruit distinct, and it saves the closest union for the knowledge that has become clear.

The teaching

A structured, classical exposition of the four Saiva spiritual paths and their corresponding fruits: 1) Pure Charya (righteous living, humility, and selfless service) leads to Saloka (residing in the divine realm). 2) Pure Kriya (internalized worship, ritual discipline, and devotion) leads to Samipya (living in close intimate nearness to the Divine). 3) Pure Yoga (breath mastery, Kundalini awakening, and sensory withdrawal) leads to Sarupa (attaining likeness to the divine form). 4) Pure Jnana (transcendental non-dual wisdom), supreme among the four, leads to Sayujya (complete, indivisible union and dissolution into the Divine). Sivavakkiyar presents the fourfold path not as rival doctrines, but as a harmonious spiritual ascent, highlighting experiential wisdom as the sole crowning vehicle for ultimate liberation.

Verse 437

  1. 1Seeruvaargal gnaanam enru seppuvar thelivulor
  2. 2Seeruvaargal naalupaadhas semmai enra thillaiyee
  3. 3Seeruvaargal sivagadhi thiruvarulaip petrapeer
  4. 4Seerumaaru kandunaalum seydhozhil thidappadee.

People who have clarity will say that joining is knowledge. The song refuses the claim that joining is the excellence of the four paths. Those who join are the ones who received Siva's state and holy grace. See how that joining happens, and let the work of the four stand firm. The four are denied the rank of an explanation. Grace is the arrival. The work still has to hold.

The teaching

Those endowed with authentic spiritual discernment declare that true union with the Divine is synonymous with Jnana (experiential wisdom), rather than the mere mechanical performance of the four external stages (பாதம்). Ultimate liberation into Shiva’s state (சிவகதி) is attained exclusively by those who receive the descent of Divine Grace (திருவருள்). Yet Sivavakkiyar does not preach antinomian carelessness: recognizing how Grace actually operates through spiritual maturity, the seeker must stand firm and diligent in the practical disciplines of the four paths. External actions must be illuminated by inner wisdom, ensuring that spiritual practice is grounded in humble surrender rather than ritual pride.
