Skill can abound along the four paths, and their excellence can still fail to stand firm. That is the judgment on the witless. They search land after land, and what they do is wander in distress. The alternative is small and exact. Show that mark, fix the look on it within, and if you can, you reach the true abode of the one whose matted hair breathes fragrance and frenzy. Searching countries is the wandering. A mark looked at inside is the arrival.
The teaching
Seekers may master great technical skill along the four paths, yet fail completely to attain true spiritual stability. Sivavakkiyar laments the tragic folly of such ignorant people who wander aimlessly from province to province and shrine to shrine (தேச நாடி அவத்திலே அலைவது), exhausting their lives in external pilgrimages. The true journey is entirely internal. If the seeker can fix their undivided awareness upon the subtle inner esoteric mark (குறி—the Ajna center or the luminous flame within the Sushumna), they will immediately attain the sacred, fragrant lotus feet of the Lord with ecstatic matted locks (வெறிகமழ் சடையுடையோன்). Wandering across countries is mere wasted agony; the real destination is within.
