Looking with knowledge is located inside you, and so is meditation on Ayan. The truth is named as holding the One's feet without being born. Death is praised by those who, once they know, are not set going back. The last command is spatial. Draw close, open the upper doorway, and look within yourself. Birth is the condition to be out of. The upper gate is the place to open. Meditation is not sent elsewhere. The verse insists it was inside all along.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar teaches that true contemplation is entirely internal: the meditation on the Creator Brahma (அயன் தியானம்) must be recognized as taking place within one's own consciousness. The ultimate goal is to abide permanently at the feet of the One, escaping the cycle of involuntary rebirth in mortal wombs. Realized Siddhas praise the mystical "death of death" (மரணம் ஏத்தினார்)—the conscious transcendence of mortal limitation through yogic mastery. Sivavakkiyar issues an urgent command: gather your scattered awareness, unlock the supreme upper doorway (மேலை வாசல் / the crown door of Brahma / Brahmarandhra), and gaze within yourself upon the boundless, uncreated Light of the Self.

If you can look inside yourself as light, and look clearly, light dawns, and the song of turiya, the fourth state, is reached. He sits in the primal chakra and dances the sacred water. Do not take fright. See, with the breath set right. Clear looking brings that dawn and a song beyond the three ordinary states. His act is the water's dance in the first wheel. Yours is to correct the breath and look without alarm.

The teaching

If the seeker possesses the refined spiritual clarity to look within their own being as pure Light, that supreme self-luminous Radiance immediately dawns, and the ecstatic celestial melody of the transcendent fourth state (துரிய கீதம் / Turiya nada) reverberates through their entire consciousness. The Primordial Lord seats Himself in the primal chakra (ஆதி சக்கரம் / Muladhara and Sahasrara) and bathes playfully in the ambrosial waters of divine grace (தீர்த்தம் ஆடுவன்). Sivavakkiyar counsels the seeker: do not be alarmed or shaken by these profound energetic shifts; discipline and harmonize the subtle breath (பிராணனைத் திருத்தி), and witness the glorious inner dance of the Divine without fear.

In the thought of those who are clear, he is grace and he is Siva, and he is the fragrance that rises and blows along the way. Every karmic impression that fell and rose in the womb is gathered for a seeing. The gloss is direct: பரிதி is the sun, and அங்கி is fire. See the moving fire, and the darkness before the sun. Karmic scent is pointed at. Sun and fire are what one is told to watch.

The teaching

In the clarified understanding of realized mystics, the Supreme manifests simultaneously as auspicious Mother (திரு / Shakti) and Transcendent Father (சிவன்), indwelling the garden of the mind like a sweet, pervasive fragrance rising from a blossom. All the heavy karmic vasanas (கன்ம வாசனை) accumulated from falling into dark wombs across countless rebirths are instantly dissolved, just as thick darkness dissipates before the rising sun (பரிதி முன் இருளதாய்). Sivavakkiyar instructs the seeker to gaze upon the sacred, moving internal fire (அங்கி / Kundalini agni) that incinerates all past karmic debris, leaving behind the pure, unblemished splendor of Consciousness.

Verse 445

Printed in the source at the start of verse 445, this gloss explains a word in verse 444:

Remain in the nature our father Isa set down. Knowing the middle, one reaches the excellent Thing. A famous search is then told against itself. The glosses give மால் as Tirumal, பார் as the world, and இடந்து as having dug. Vishnu and Brahma hunted in haste for root and crown, dug the world, were born in the sky, and still did not see. The middle is where those searches never stood. Haste and digging fail.

The teaching

Abide serenely in the natural spiritual equilibrium established by our Father, the Supreme Lord. By discerning the "middle" (நடு / the central Sushumna path, balancing between Ida and Pingala, between sensory indulgence and rigid asceticism), one unites with the immaculate Reality. Sivavakkiyar reinterprets the famous Puranic myth of Brahma and Vishnu: Vishnu dug frantically into the subterranean earth to find Shiva’s feet, while Brahma flew into the heavens to locate Shiva’s crown, yet both failed in their egoistic haste. The infinite Divine cannot be discovered through outward climbing or downward excavation; It reveals Itself only to those who cease all restless seeking and rest in the tranquil Middle Channel within.

People speak of Brahma and Tirumal as if the speech were a vision, and they have not seen. The gloss gives மால் as Vishnu. Insolence is asked a blunt question: press him, and will the king stay as one who can be embraced? Service alone, with love, a worshipping look, brings an old devotion to ripeness, the devotion of the three cities burned. Vision-talk is empty. Loving service fills that devotion out.

The teaching

Scholars and hypocritical priests speak boastfully of having visions of Brahma and Vishnu, yet their claims are mere theatrical delusions. Sivavakkiyar asks with biting pragmatism: if a subject behaves with arrogance and aggressive demands, will the sovereign king ever welcome him into close intimacy? Divinity cannot be grasped through intellectual insolence or forceful pretension. Only when the seeker approaches with humble, dedicated service (தொண்டு) and adores the Divine with tender love, does the ancient, all-consuming devotion that reduced the three demonic cities to ashes (முப்புரம் எரிந்த பத்தி) reach its complete, illuminating maturity.

Verse 447

  2. 2Patrilaadha onrudhannai patrinirka valladhu

  4. 4Petrapeerai anpudan piriyamaagak keelumee.

Seeing comes to an end, and the singer accepts it. He has withdrawn. Nothing before and nothing after appears. What can stand holding that One is itself without a hold. Will the Lord's feet show themselves because someone has studied? Ask, with love, the people who have attained. Learning is refused as a cause of sight. Those who received it are the ones to ask, and the asking has to be affectionate.

The teaching

A magnificent testimony of non-dual realization: the mystic perceives absolutely nothing prior or subsequent to the Divine; the Lord alone fills the entirety of existence The Supreme is completely devoid of attachments (பற்று இல்லாத ஒன்று); abiding in That requires letting go of all mental clinging. Can the sacred lotus feet of Ishvara ever be reached through mere academic study and intellectual erudition (கற்றிதாலோ)? Sivavakkiyar answers with an absolute negative. If you seek authentic truth, approach with loving reverence those realized masters who have actually attained the direct experience (பெற்றபேரை அன்புடன் கேளுமே), for divine wisdom is transmitted through living communion, not dead syllables.
