Skill can abound along the four paths, and their excellence can still fail to stand firm. That is the judgment on the witless. They search land after land, and what they do is wander in distress. The alternative is small and exact. Show that mark, fix the look on it within, and if you can, you reach the true abode of the one whose matted hair breathes fragrance and frenzy. Searching countries is the wandering. A mark looked at inside is the arrival.

The teaching

Seekers may master great technical skill along the four paths, yet fail completely to attain true spiritual stability. Sivavakkiyar laments the tragic folly of such ignorant people who wander aimlessly from province to province and shrine to shrine (தேச நாடி அவத்திலே அலைவது), exhausting their lives in external pilgrimages. The true journey is entirely internal. If the seeker can fix their undivided awareness upon the subtle inner esoteric mark (குறி—the Ajna center or the luminous flame within the Sushumna), they will immediately attain the sacred, fragrant lotus feet of the Lord with ecstatic matted locks (வெறிகமழ் சடையுடையோன்). Wandering across countries is mere wasted agony; the real destination is within.

Verse 439

Fools are told they do not know the liberation of people who have reached it. Principles that come with a host, and sins, are put in one question: are they not the same sort of obstacle? The image is a watercourse. Open the sluice, and water rises in the channel. In that way, raise the body's root channel and fix it. Categories and offenses are set aside together. What is demanded is a lifting in the flesh.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar chides spiritual novices who remain completely blind to the nature of authentic liberation. He boldly equates the vast array of philosophical categories (தத்துவங்கள் / tattvas) with binding sins and obstacles (பாதகங்கள்), for becoming intellectually entangled in theoretical systems only imprisons consciousness in conceptual duality. Using a vivid irrigation metaphor, the Siddha illustrates the true method of realization: just as opening a canal sluice-gate allows the pent-up water to rush violently upward into the irrigation channel, so must the practitioner unblock the psychic knots and forcefully elevate the Kundalini energy through the central root channel (மூலநாடி / Sushumna) of the body, anchoring it securely at the crown.

The raising goes on. Fix and lift the region, open the bolts of the three forms, and if one climbs the channel, nectar comes down. The gloss gives தந்தி as a nadi. A compressed clause of saying accompanies the Lord's appearing to his servants. The supreme life then fits, and living is that fit. The verse is a sequence of results: an opened bar, a climbed channel, descending nectar, a lord who shows himself, and a life joined to what is beyond life. Each result depends on the climb.

The teaching

A profound esoteric blueprint of Kundalini ascension and spiritual culmination. The yogi firmly anchors and elevates the prana, piercing through the three cosmic mandalas (Fire, Sun, and Moon) and unlocking the three formidable psychic bolts (the granthis of Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra). As the ascending current climbs the central subtle cord (தந்தி / Sushumna), the cool ambrosial nectar of immortality (அமுதம்) cascades downward from the crown, saturating every cell of the practitioner. In that exalted state of union, the cosmic Master reveals Himself directly to the surrendered servant, proclaiming His indivisible identity: "I am this!" The individual life-breath (உயிர்) and the Supreme Reality (பரம்) merge into an eternal, harmonious communion.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 441, this gloss explains a word in verse 440:

In the body's root channel, raise fire, and do it with love. Striving in the illusion of lust has to stop as well. Then, like a Meru-channel of thirst becoming many, a tight compound, those who bowed with love at the feet of the One will know. Fire at the root and the end of lustful effort belong together. Knowledge is promised to that bow, once desire's maya has been left off.

The teaching

In the subtle root channel of the body (ஆக மூலநாடி / Muladhara), the practitioner must ignite the sacred spiritual fire of Kundalini (அனல் எழுப்பி) with deep devotion. By extinguishing the unruly senses (பொறி அழித்து) and refusing to let the vital energy leak into the delusions of lustful indulgence (போக மாய்கை), the upward prana surges through the golden central Meru-channel (மேரு நாடி / the spinal column). As worldly thirst is transmuted into the nectar of spiritual awakening, those who bow with pure, selfless love at the lotus feet of the One Non-Dual Lord directly perceive the transcendent Truth that lies beyond all conceptual knowledge.

Looking with knowledge is located inside you, and so is meditation on Ayan. The truth is named as holding the One's feet without being born. Death is praised by those who, once they know, are not set going back. The last command is spatial. Draw close, open the upper doorway, and look within yourself. Birth is the condition to be out of. The upper gate is the place to open. Meditation is not sent elsewhere. The verse insists it was inside all along.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar teaches that true contemplation is entirely internal: the meditation on the Creator Brahma (அயன் தியானம்) must be recognized as taking place within one's own consciousness. The ultimate goal is to abide permanently at the feet of the One, escaping the cycle of involuntary rebirth in mortal wombs. Realized Siddhas praise the mystical "death of death" (மரணம் ஏத்தினார்)—the conscious transcendence of mortal limitation through yogic mastery. Sivavakkiyar issues an urgent command: gather your scattered awareness, unlock the supreme upper doorway (மேலை வாசல் / the crown door of Brahma / Brahmarandhra), and gaze within yourself upon the boundless, uncreated Light of the Self.

If you can look inside yourself as light, and look clearly, light dawns, and the song of turiya, the fourth state, is reached. He sits in the primal chakra and dances the sacred water. Do not take fright. See, with the breath set right. Clear looking brings that dawn and a song beyond the three ordinary states. His act is the water's dance in the first wheel. Yours is to correct the breath and look without alarm.

The teaching

If the seeker possesses the refined spiritual clarity to look within their own being as pure Light, that supreme self-luminous Radiance immediately dawns, and the ecstatic celestial melody of the transcendent fourth state (துரிய கீதம் / Turiya nada) reverberates through their entire consciousness. The Primordial Lord seats Himself in the primal chakra (ஆதி சக்கரம் / Muladhara and Sahasrara) and bathes playfully in the ambrosial waters of divine grace (தீர்த்தம் ஆடுவன்). Sivavakkiyar counsels the seeker: do not be alarmed or shaken by these profound energetic shifts; discipline and harmonize the subtle breath (பிராணனைத் திருத்தி), and witness the glorious inner dance of the Divine without fear.
