The voice turns to the Lord and stays there. The supreme is his, the singer has no second fear, and he asks to be looked at. The hands have a daily duty to be joined toward him. He is the roaming splendor who melted the head and gave nectar. The strength that came from him is named three times, and each time the name is truth.

The teaching

In a surge of ecstatic devotion, the Siddha speaks directly to the indwelling Lord with absolute fearlessness and total surrender. Having recognized that the Supreme belongs to God alone, the mystic knows no earthly terror or religious dread. The true duty of the soul is perpetual inward adoration of this gracious Presence, who melts the crown of the skull with yogic fire and releases the cooling nectar of immortality (அமுதம்) throughout the nadis. The transcendent fortitude granted by this divine communion is proclaimed not as a transient feeling or doctrine, but as the thrice-affirmed, absolute Truth.

Verse 470

  1. 1Enagaththil ennainaan engumodi naadineen
  2. 2Enagaththil ennaianri eedhumonru kandileen
  3. 3Minezhuppi vinnagaththin minodungu maarupol
  4. 4Enagaththul iisanodu yaanumalla thillaiyee.

Inside his own heart he ran everywhere looking for himself, and inside that heart he found nothing other than himself. Lightning is raised, and the lightning of the sky folds away: that is the likeness. With the Lord in the heart, the packed last words leave no separate I standing. The search ends where it began.

The teaching

Here Sivavakkiyar delivers one of the purest expressions of Advaitic realization in all of world literature. The seeker turns inward, scouring every corner of interior consciousness to find the independent self, only to discover that no isolated 'ego' exists at all—there is only the pure, undivided Witness. Using the breathtaking metaphor of lightning flashing across the celestial expanse and instantly collapsing back into the empty sky, the poet illustrates how individual consciousness dissolves into the Absolute. In the inner chamber of the heart, the distinction between the soul and God vanishes completely; there is no 'I' and no 'other'—only the single, seamless reality of Shiva.

Verse 471

  1. 1Idangalpanni suththiseydhee ittapiida miidhilee
  2. 2Adanganiiru puusalseydhu arundhavangal pannuviir
  3. 3Odunguginra naadhanaar udhikkumgnaanam evvidam?
  4. 4Adanguginradhu evvidam? arindhupuusai seyyumee.

Sites are made, purification is performed, and on the seat that was set they raise a fuss with ash meant to stay subdued, and they do austerities called rare. The song asks where the knowledge is in which the withdrawing Lord rises, and where the thing that comes under control actually is. Worship is what you do after those places are known.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar interrogates the elaborate theatricality of conventional rituals. Seekers prepare elaborate ceremonial altars, rigorously scrub their physical spaces, smear consecrated ash across their foreheads, and practice painful asceticism. Yet the Siddha pierces their display with fundamental questions: Where is the true altar of Consciousness? Where does the cosmic Lord withdraw and re-emerge? Where does the restless mind genuinely dissolve into peace? Until the seeker discovers this subtle inner space where thoughts subside into silence, all external ritual pedestals and ash-smeared penances remain empty gestures. True worship begins only when the internal sanctuary is known.

Verse 472

  1. 1Puththagang kalaisumandhu poygalaip pidhatruviir.
  2. 2Seththidam pirandhidam adhuengngan enru arigiliir
  3. 3Aththanaiya sindhanai arindhunokka valliireel
  4. 4Uththamaththul aayasodhi unarumbogam aagumee.

Books are a load on the shoulder, and what is muttered from them is called lies. Where one dies, where one is born, and how that is, stay unknown. If that much thought can be known and looked at, the light that has arisen within the highest becomes a joy that is felt. The song adds no further book.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar scathingly describes bookish pandits as beasts of burden carrying heavy loads of scriptures on their backs, babbling scholarly dogmas without understanding the most basic mysteries of human existence: Where does the soul go when the body dies, and from whence did it enter at birth? All their academic erudition cannot answer the reality of mortality. The Siddha insists that if one sets aside textual pedantry and turns the gaze inward to contemplate the true threshold of life and death, the supreme Light dwelling in the highest reaches of consciousness will reveal itself—not as an abstract theory, but as an overwhelming, experiential bliss (உணரும் போகம்).

Verse 473

  1. 1Arulilee pirandhuninru maayairuupam aagiyee
  2. 2Irulilee thayanguginra eezhaimaandhar keenmino.
  3. 3Porulilee thavambunaindhu porundhinokka valliireel
  4. 4Maruladhueedhu? vanniyin maraindhadhee sivaayamee.

Born standing in grace, people become a form of maya, and those who waver in that dark are called poor and told to listen. Austerity has to be put on in the substance itself, and the looking has to fit. Delusion is then asked what it is. What has gone hidden in the fire is Sivayam, the five-letter name.

The teaching

Human beings are born from the boundless ocean of divine Grace (அருள்), yet they foolishly identify with transient illusory forms (மாயை) and wander terrified in spiritual darkness. Sivavakkiyar calls upon suffering humanity with urgent compassion. If seekers would only cease chasing superficial ephemera and anchor their contemplation in the ultimate Reality (பொருள்), the veil of delusion would instantly dissolve. Just as latent fire lies concealed within firewood until ignited, the supreme transformative vibration of Sivayanama lies hidden within the human vessel, ready to burst forth as the liberating flame of self-realization.

Verse 474

  1. 1Thanmasindhai aamalavum thavamariyaath thanmaiyaayk
  2. 2Kanmasindhai veyiluzhanru karuththazhindha kasadaree,
  3. 3Senmam senmam theediyum thelivonaadha selvanai
  4. 4Nanmaiyaaga ummulee nayandhugaana veenumee.

As long as the mind is dharma, the condition is one that does not know austerity. The mind of karma wanders in the heat until intention is ruined, and those people are called flawed. Birth after birth of searching still cannot make the wealthy one clear. He is to be seen with pleasure, as the good, inside themselves.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar distinguishes between conventional moralistic piety and genuine spiritual realization. Those who exhaust their lives obsessing over external codes of righteousness (dharma) and anxious karmic rituals wander like travelers stranded in a scorching desert, burning their mental energy without ever tasting authentic inner stillness (tapas). Seeking the Divine through endless outward rebirths yields only confusion. The Supreme Treasure—the eternal Lord—is not an external deity to be attained through moral transactions; He already resides as the supreme Good within one's own heart. The seeker must cease wandering and behold Him within with tender delight and meditative intimacy.
