As long as the mind is dharma, the condition is one that does not know austerity. The mind of karma wanders in the heat until intention is ruined, and those people are called flawed. Birth after birth of searching still cannot make the wealthy one clear. He is to be seen with pleasure, as the good, inside themselves.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar distinguishes between conventional moralistic piety and genuine spiritual realization. Those who exhaust their lives obsessing over external codes of righteousness (dharma) and anxious karmic rituals wander like travelers stranded in a scorching desert, burning their mental energy without ever tasting authentic inner stillness (tapas). Seeking the Divine through endless outward rebirths yields only confusion. The Supreme Treasure—the eternal Lord—is not an external deity to be attained through moral transactions; He already resides as the supreme Good within one's own heart. The seeker must cease wandering and behold Him within with tender delight and meditative intimacy.

Knowledge that has passed beyond gets recited while the heart is still a thief. When that theft is cut out, the song asks whether any path besides this one has been seen. If the heart can be lit and the light drawn near every day, clear knowledge stands within, and what ranks first is Sivayam. Recitation with the theft still in place is the shame.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar condemns the rampant hypocrisy of religious pretenders who preach elevated metaphysics while harboring deceit, malice, and pride in their hearts. The transient physical body is nothing more than water pooled in a shallow ditch—fragile, muddy, and destined to vanish. Seeking safety in external doctrines while spiritually hollow guarantees destruction. The Siddha offers the only true salvation: if the seeker purges internal deceit and gazes with joyous reverence upon the self-luminous Light dwelling within, they will be anchored in eternity, saved from being swept away and drowned like helpless victims in the turbulent floods of samsara.

Verse 476

Saying they must see, they climb sea and mountain. People with no understanding are asked whether that is not arrogance. The other condition is wearing that Lord's feet in the true body, because it is wanted. Then the life that stood as Thanu, which the gloss names as the supreme being, itself becomes Siva.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar ridicules the futile hardships of pilgrims who cross rough seas and scale arduous mountain peaks in search of God. All this frantic wandering is an exercise in vanity, inflicting needless physical agony on the body while leaving the restless mind untouched. God does not dwell on distant summits or remote geographical shrines; the Divine is the innermost reality of the seeker. By donning the armor of true contemplative wisdom and gazing within, the seeker can uproot the primordial arrogance of ego (anava) and abide in serene, effortless stillness without taking a single step outside.

A light that cannot be measured is at once the atom and the undivided whole. Marked within as its own quality and looked at, it is release. What they do instead is count fingers to a little clicking sound, inside a daze they cannot come back from. Want of resolve is why the puja goes on. The click is the sound of not looking.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar celebrates the paradox of the Absolute: subtler than the subatomic particle yet encompassing the infinite cosmos—an immeasurable, radiant Light beyond conception. Rather than seeking this mystery through intellectual debate, the seeker is urged to recognize this peerless splendour within the subtle chamber of the self. By merging individual consciousness with this incomparable effulgence in unbroken non-dual union, the cycle of mortality is severed forever. The seeker transcends the grim fate of the physical body as a rotting corpse (பிணம்) and escapes the revolving wheel of birth and death, stepping into timeless immortality.

Verse 478

They stand worn out crying spit, spit, as if saliva were the whole of impurity. The pure body, the song says, came to be as that spit; the packed துச்சில் reads, against எச்சில், as the spit of a hut. Honey that was stored is spit, the flower is the bee's spit, and milk drawn with the teat in the hand is spit. The gloss names சுதா as the cow's teat. What they shrink from is what they take in.

The teaching

In a tour de force of biological insight and social satire, Sivavakkiyar completely demolishes the orthodox obsession with ritual defilement (எச்சில்). Caste purists shrink in horror from saliva and bodily contact, yet the Siddha exposes that their entire world of worship is constructed of saliva. Honey offered to the gods is the regurgitated spit of bees; fresh blossoms picked for the altar are already tasted and soiled by insects; and consecrated cow's milk used for holy bathing is drawn from teats licked by nursing calves. Even the human body itself originates from visceral biological fluids. By showing that nature itself operates through these sacred secretions, Sivavakkiyar shatters artificial notions of pollution, revealing that true purity is purely an inward spiritual state.

They run, saying holy water, linga, and image, and that running is called evil. Holy water and linga are then told to clarify the life in which they stand inside. If the two can be seen clearly within, they do not remain a destination. What stands foremost is Sivayam. The same pair of words opens every line, and each time the address moves inward.

The teaching

Orthodox Hinduism revolves around the holy triad of sacred waters (teertha), enshrined emblems (linga), and anthropomorphic idols (murti). Sivavakkiyar rebukes those who run after these external shrines as spiritually perverse (தீதர்), because they seek outside what is throbbing within their own breath. The ultimate holy river and the true, uncarved Linga is the indwelling life-force (jiva) animating the physical frame. When the seeker turns within and clearly beholds this inner sanctuary, the external paraphernalia of temples falls away. The living soul itself is recognized as the supreme Linga, shining forth as the triumphant glory of Sivayanama.
