Whatever is born has a dying, and foolish people do not know it. They rejoice as though dying will not come, and they wander talking of our property and your property, in hints. The song asks what costume this is. நிறப்பும்பொந்தி is compressed: color, and a hollow. When those are destroyed, the singer asks the Lord whether it is love. Property and complexion are what the living show. The question is put when both fail.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar closes this section with a haunting meditation on the tragic blindness of human beings in the face of inevitable death. Everything born into the temporal world is marked for the grave, yet foolish mortals live in bizarre denial, rejoicing as though they are immortal while bickering obsessively over 'mine' and 'thine'. The poet mocks this worldly existence as a ridiculous, superficial costume (கோலம்). When the radiant complexion fades and the hollow shell of flesh collapses into dust, will all these petty disputes and worldly possessions yield true divine love? Sivavakkiyar calls upon the Lord, urging seekers to strip away worldly pretensions before the final hour strikes, and to anchor their fleeting lives in the eternal love of the Divine.

You stop at a face. A beautiful woman wears paste burnt hard, and that moon-face is what you take in, sick with longing, while you never learn to stand up into a firm mind. The singer asks whether you even know the mad play of a snake asleep in a box. Then the knot is undone and a look involving Brahma follows, and the line asks what refuge you still have. The late look leaves you holding that question.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar confronts the hypnotic spell of physical infatuation and carnal obsession. Worldly minds are easily seduced by superficial allure—a woman's face adorned with cosmetic sandalwood and perfumed pastes—yearning after external beauty while remaining spiritually impotent, incapable of establishing the erect, vertical awareness of Sushumna (திட்டநெட்டு). The Siddha pierces this sensory trance by exposing the body as an illusory casket containing a dormant serpent Esoterically, this serpent represents both the dormant Kundalini energy squandered in base lust and the venomous mortality lurking within mortal flesh. When the cosmic knot of life (பிரம முடிச்சு / Brahma-granthi) is untied by the Creator or severed by impending death, worldly infatuation instantly evaporates. Sivavakkiyar leaves the sensualist with a chilling existential interrogation: when the fragile knot of mortal illusion dissolves, where will you find your ultimate refuge?

Reciting the Veda is named as if it might be a life's work, and on this earth the line calls that work vain. Running a katam of road and then another, for a worship that sounds like love, is asked as a question that expects no. Against that distance stands the primal lord, the one who ate butter, and the question whether he is already inside us. Faulty rites and the Veda shrink to a what-for. The act he keeps is a look inside, aimed and marked.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a biting critique of scholastic orthodoxy and exhausting pilgrimages. Endless chanting of Vedic hymns and walking weary miles across rugged landscapes to distant shrines are dismissed as futile labors that reduce worship to hollow chaff (கோது பூசை). The Siddha unveils the central Advaitic truth of his realization: the Primal Sovereign (ஆதிநாதன்)—poetically recalled as the cowherd lord who consumed the butter—already abides intimately within our own inner consciousness (நம்முளே). In Siddha esoteric mysticism, butter is the refined nectar of pure awareness extracted by churning the breath and mind through internal yoga. To seek an external deity through grueling journeys while ignoring the indwelling Lord is the height of spiritual tragedy. Sivavakkiyar urges the seeker to cease all outward running, quiet the senses, and gaze deeply within (உம்முளே குறித்துப் பாரும்) to encounter the living Divine.

Verse 502

The verse opens by asking where anything could be without the Supreme, and where the Supreme itself could be said to stay. Virtue is the answer that follows. For sinners who have no virtue, the Supreme is absent, and that absence is called the truth. A hand that can grasp and wealth that can be held still fail in the hour when grace is missing. That hour becomes an empty void, and the void is named a ruined hell. The hell is the graceless moment you are in.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar explores the profound metaphysical paradox of divine omnipresence and moral blindness. While the Supreme Reality (பரம்) inherently pervades every corner of existence, it remains completely imperceptible to unrighteous individuals who live devoid of virtue and moral truth (அறம்). External possessions and capable hands are spiritually meaningless if the human heart lacks grace, compassion, and inner light (அருள்). Without this sacred connection, material life, no matter how affluent or physically able, collapses into an empty, desolate void (சூனியம்). The Siddha makes it clear that hell (பாழ் நரகம்) is not an imaginary subterranean underworld, but the immediate psychological and existential state of living alienated from divine grace and moral integrity. Where righteousness and compassion are absent, the Divine cannot be experienced, reducing existence to utter desolation.

Verse 503

No god on this earth is left standing apart from a woman's shoulder. When that shoulder is joined, the line says human life flourishes, and the cause is Sakti, the one power who becomes woman and who caught hold. The gloss on நீலிகங்கை is the Ganga of blue color, and Isan is shown taking his delight in her as she too becomes woman. The embrace is stated in the open. The singer places the Lord inside it.

The teaching

Rejecting the dry, misogynistic ascetism that demonizes women, Sivavakkiyar celebrates the sacred cosmic polarity of Shiva and Shakti. Throughout the manifest cosmos, no divine entity exists in isolation from the feminine principle; divine power becomes creative and fruitful only when joined with the sacred feminine (மாதர்தோள் புணர்ந்தபோது). In Siddha cosmology, Primordial Energy (சக்தி) is the active dynamic force that animates static consciousness. Even the supreme ascetic, Lord Ishana, rejoices in carrying the river-goddess Ganga (நீலிகங்கை) crowned upon his head. In the internal microcosm of Vasi Yoga, Ganga represents the cooling, lunar stream of divine nectar descending from the crown chakra (Sahasrara) to unite with the fiery solar consciousness in the body. True spiritual fruition and human flourishing arise not from sterile repression, but from the harmonious integration of static awareness and dynamic cosmic energy.

Verse 504

  1. 1Siththarenrum siriyarenrum ariyonaadha siivargaal!

  4. 4Aththannaadum indhanaadum avargalukkelaa monree.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 504, this gloss explains a word in verse 503:

You are hailed as living beings who cannot tell a siddha from a small man. When the siddha stands here, you decide he is mad. The next question is compressed: with him present, will you still see a madman settled over the land? Then the two countries fold together. The father's land and this land are one for all of them. The name madman, and the border you would trust, do not outlast the person standing in front of you.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar laments the profound lack of spiritual discernment in ordinary mortals (சீவர்காள்), who are utterly unable to distinguish an authentic, realized Siddha from a petty, superficial person. Because the enlightened Siddha rejects societal pretenses, caste divisions, and rigid orthodox ceremonies, conventional society invariably brands him a madman or lunatic (பித்தன்). Yet the Siddha remains wholly indifferent to the judgments and artificial boundaries of the mortal realm. Having dissolved the dualistic split between the transcendental kingdom of the Supreme Father (அத்தன் நாடு) and this physical world (இந்த நாடு), he experiences both as one indivisible, radiant continuum. While conditioned minds stay imprisoned within the narrow borders of social approval and sectarian dogmas, the Siddha moves in absolute freedom, recognizing the entire cosmos as the living sanctuary of the One.
