The verse opens by asking where anything could be without the Supreme, and where the Supreme itself could be said to stay. Virtue is the answer that follows. For sinners who have no virtue, the Supreme is absent, and that absence is called the truth. A hand that can grasp and wealth that can be held still fail in the hour when grace is missing. That hour becomes an empty void, and the void is named a ruined hell. The hell is the graceless moment you are in.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar explores the profound metaphysical paradox of divine omnipresence and moral blindness. While the Supreme Reality (பரம்) inherently pervades every corner of existence, it remains completely imperceptible to unrighteous individuals who live devoid of virtue and moral truth (அறம்). External possessions and capable hands are spiritually meaningless if the human heart lacks grace, compassion, and inner light (அருள்). Without this sacred connection, material life, no matter how affluent or physically able, collapses into an empty, desolate void (சூனியம்). The Siddha makes it clear that hell (பாழ் நரகம்) is not an imaginary subterranean underworld, but the immediate psychological and existential state of living alienated from divine grace and moral integrity. Where righteousness and compassion are absent, the Divine cannot be experienced, reducing existence to utter desolation.

Verse 503

  1. 1Maadhardhol seeraadhadheevar maanilaththil illaiyee!

No god on this earth is left standing apart from a woman's shoulder. When that shoulder is joined, the line says human life flourishes, and the cause is Sakti, the one power who becomes woman and who caught hold. The gloss on நீலிகங்கை is the Ganga of blue color, and Isan is shown taking his delight in her as she too becomes woman. The embrace is stated in the open. The singer places the Lord inside it.

The teaching

Rejecting the dry, misogynistic ascetism that demonizes women, Sivavakkiyar celebrates the sacred cosmic polarity of Shiva and Shakti. Throughout the manifest cosmos, no divine entity exists in isolation from the feminine principle; divine power becomes creative and fruitful only when joined with the sacred feminine (மாதர்தோள் புணர்ந்தபோது). In Siddha cosmology, Primordial Energy (சக்தி) is the active dynamic force that animates static consciousness. Even the supreme ascetic, Lord Ishana, rejoices in carrying the river-goddess Ganga (நீலிகங்கை) crowned upon his head. In the internal microcosm of Vasi Yoga, Ganga represents the cooling, lunar stream of divine nectar descending from the crown chakra (Sahasrara) to unite with the fiery solar consciousness in the body. True spiritual fruition and human flourishing arise not from sterile repression, but from the harmonious integration of static awareness and dynamic cosmic energy.

Verse 504

  1. 1Siththarenrum siriyarenrum ariyonaadha siivargaal!
  2. 2Siththaringu irundhapodhu piththar enru ennuviir!
  3. 3Siththaringu irundhum enna piththannaattirup paaro?
  4. 4Aththannaadum indhanaadum avargalukkelaa monree.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 504, this gloss explains a word in verse 503:

You are hailed as living beings who cannot tell a siddha from a small man. When the siddha stands here, you decide he is mad. The next question is compressed: with him present, will you still see a madman settled over the land? Then the two countries fold together. The father's land and this land are one for all of them. The name madman, and the border you would trust, do not outlast the person standing in front of you.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar laments the profound lack of spiritual discernment in ordinary mortals (சீவர்காள்), who are utterly unable to distinguish an authentic, realized Siddha from a petty, superficial person. Because the enlightened Siddha rejects societal pretenses, caste divisions, and rigid orthodox ceremonies, conventional society invariably brands him a madman or lunatic (பித்தன்). Yet the Siddha remains wholly indifferent to the judgments and artificial boundaries of the mortal realm. Having dissolved the dualistic split between the transcendental kingdom of the Supreme Father (அத்தன் நாடு) and this physical world (இந்த நாடு), he experiences both as one indivisible, radiant continuum. While conditioned minds stay imprisoned within the narrow borders of social approval and sectarian dogmas, the Siddha moves in absolute freedom, recognizing the entire cosmos as the living sanctuary of the One.

  4. 4Kuundhalammai konalonrum kurikkonaadhi thunmaiyee.

Human life on the soil is treated as something that can be forgotten, and the same line is already in the sky. If you can set right the spirit that has grown calm, you may see the feet of the spotless one. The gloss is plain: the assembly is the court, and the spotless one is the one without impurity, dancing there as king. The close turns to the lady of the long hair. Not one crookedness can be marked in her, and that, the line says, is the truth.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar addresses the tragic tendency of human beings to neglect the immediate reality of life on earth while anxiously yearning for an imaginary heavenly paradise in the hereafter The Siddha rejects the postponement of spiritual fulfillment to a post-mortem celestial realm. Instead, he describes liberation as an intimate, living bridal mysticism experienced within the body: the divine Inner Husband (காந்தன்)—the indwelling Supreme Consciousness—approaches and clasps the soul in loving union (கலவி இன்பம்). This mystical merger within the heart lotus causes consciousness to flourish like a magnificent flower-grove bursting with vibrant green shoots and intoxicating blossoms (பூந்தழையிற் சோலை). Divine beatitude is not a distant reward beyond the clouds, but an ecstatic, blossoming communion to be tasted directly within one's own living vessel.

Verse 506

  2. 2சருகருந்தில் தேகங்குன்றிச் சஞ்சலம் உண்டாகுமே;
  1. 1Sarugaruththi niirgudiththus saaralvaazh thavasigaal!

  3. 3Varuvirundhodu unduuduththi valarmanai sugippireel
  4. 4Varuvirundhon iisanaagi vaazhvalikkum sivaayamee.

Hillside ascetics are called out for a diet of fallen leaves and a drink of water. The gloss gives சருகு as the shed leaf. On that food the body shrinks and a restless mind appears. The other picture is a house that is growing: eat and dress with the guest who comes, and take your ease there. That guest becomes the Lord. What gives life is Sivaya itself, the name, standing where the dry leaf stood.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar directs his sharp polemic against extreme, self-mortifying ascetics (தவசிகள்) who retreat to mountain slopes, starving their bodies on dry leaves and sipping water in hopes of salvation. He exposes the tragic irony of their penance: while they torment the outer physical frame, the sweet, immortal fruit of divine wisdom (பழம் ஒன்று உண்டு) ripens undiscovered within their very own being. Meanwhile, mortal time is running out, and the life-breath (ஆவி) approaches the moment of its inevitable departure from the body. Sivavakkiyar urges these austere hermits to abandon external physical torture, and instead allow the rigid ego to soften and melt in heartfelt contemplation Only by turning the awareness inward can one behold the One Supreme Being who has resided within all along.

Verse 507

Forest, mound, hill, hollow, and the river of the grove can all be left behind, and country after country as well. The singer asks whether people who wander off like that will see the Lord's feet. Your soul, out of its cage, looks only toward the dancer's town, and the printed join of those words is tight. Even that look does not seat them on the feet of Hara, the feet that have gained release. Departure and a glance toward the dancer's town still leave them unseated.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar dismantles the widespread illusion that physical pilgrimage brings spiritual enlightenment. Mortals leave behind their homes, crossing dense forests, mountains, valleys, and wild rivers, yet their frantic wandering across foreign countries never reveals the sacred feet of the Lord (நாதன்பாதம் காண்பரோ). Sivavakkiyar exposes their fundamental error: while their soul remains imprisoned within the physical cage of ignorance (கூடு), they fixate their outward desires exclusively upon physical temple towns—such as the shrine of the Cosmic Dancer (கூத்தனூர்). By seeking the Divine outside themselves, they fail to awaken and stabilize their consciousness upon the liberated feet of Hara (வீடுபெற்ற அரன்பதம்) residing within the inner sanctum of the heart. The true Chidambaram is the inner space of pure awareness; no amount of geographical travel can substitute for internal self-realization.
