The neck is straightened and a good eye is opened, the posture of someone trying hard to see. What ripened, gaped, and left is called a sin, and the sin is mocked. Then the posture is left behind. In a seed pressed firm there is something without beginning. The last line is compressed. It may sit in a letter, or in this letter; it may remain, and it does remain. The beginningless one is left in the seed, with a certainty that follows a maybe.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar skewers those practitioners who adopt elaborate outward yogic postures—stiffening the neck, fixing the eyeballs in external gazing—while their spiritual essence rots and their lives drain away in ignorance and open-mouthed vanity True yoga does not consist of physical gymnastics or theatrical poses. Deep within the core of existence lies the firmly anchored primordial seed (அழுத்தமான வித்து), home to the beginningless, timeless Source (அனாதி). Whether experienced as the silent, unwritten Void (எழுத்திலா) or embodied in the sacred syllable, that eternal Reality is already present within the practitioner—waiting not for physical posturing, but for authentic internal realization.

Illusion stands where it can be seen, and the elements stand mixed with it. The test is ordinary: do you know the way of eating and sleeping in the middle of that, and can you remain knowing it? If you can, the ancient six are one, and that one is the pure one born of the Veda. What stands there is release for the universe, the root under the primal root. Eating and sleeping are the entrance. The high names come after that knowing.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar brings the highest non-dual wisdom down to the most mundane aspects of human existence. The manifest universe is a dance of maya and the five elements, yet the gateway to liberation does not require fleeing from the world into a cave. If an aspirant can cultivate unbroken witness-consciousness during the natural daily rhythms of eating and sleeping (உண்டு உறங்கும் ஆறு உணர்ந்திருக்க வல்லீரேல்)—maintaining meditative awareness in waking and sleep states—the six subtle chakras and six warring philosophical systems (பண்டை ஆறு) dissolve into seamless unity. Such an awakened soul becomes the pure embodiment of the Vedas, realizing the primordial Root of all existence (ஆதிமூலம்) and attaining liberation that embraces the entire cosmos.

Grief for the door that gave birth sends people off past counting. They can watch a plantain swell and a bud open and still not know the cause. Another door is the ripened one. Open that, look by the channel, and the illusion that keeps appearing will leave off. Light comes and appears once that illusion has quit. The plantain is there so the birth-door will not be the only process they trust.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a hard-hitting critique of carnal obsession and spiritual blindness. Millions of souls spend their lifetimes obsessed with the female womb—the gate through which they entered the world—repeating the cycle of lust, reproduction, and death without ever questioning the cosmic mystery of manifestation (likened to the blossoming plantain bud). The Siddha directs the seeker's attention away from the downward reproductive gate to the esoteric upward gate of Kundalini: opening the subtle doorway of the lower energy center and directing the breath and awareness through the Sushumna nadi When the upward spiritual channel is penetrated, the binding web of sensory illusion (மாயை) dissolves, and the blinding inner light of Shivam (சோதி) dawns.

The mutes are still grieving a door, and now the door whirls, and they swing with it. The question is whether they ever meant to open that door and join the truth. After the door is opened and the truth is known, the truth inside is not a second object behind the planks. It is the breath. Pity that swings, and a door opened onto breath, are the two motions of the song.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar castigates humanity as spiritually mute beings caught in an agonizing emotional pendulum (ஊசல்), tossed violently by worldly attachments and carnal desires centered around the turbulent gateway of physical rebirth (உழலும் வாசல்). Instead of being victims of this perpetual cycle, why not consciously unlock this energetic vortex through Vasi yoga? When the practitioner penetrates this revolving gateway of the body through breath regulation, the ultimate realization dawns: the supreme, unchanging Truth residing at the heart of this turbulent mortal vessel is nothing other than the divine Life-Spirit itself (ஆவி / Prana-Consciousness). The seeker discovers that the object of all spiritual questing was already animating every breath within.

Light sprouts in the root channel. The stay asked for is inside your own four measures, after you have searched there and remained. From that stay two results are allowed that sound unequal: one may live as a child, and one may become the supreme Brahman. Both are bound by oath, the throat that drank the poison and the mother's oath. The swearing says the offer will not be taken back as a figure of speech.

The teaching

A celebrated and definitive verse on Kundalini yoga and cellular rejuvenation (kaya kalpa). In the root center (மூலநாடி / Muladhara), the primordial serpent power slumbers until it is awakened as a brilliant rising flame. Sivavakkiyar gives a precise yogic injunction: if an adept can focus their breath and unwavering awareness upon this rising inner flame within for a span of four naligais (roughly ninety-six minutes), the body transcends physical decay, attaining the ageless, radiant innocence of a divine child (பாலனாகி வாழலாம்), while the consciousness merges into non-dual identity with the Supreme Absolute (பரப்பிரமம் ஆகலாம்). To emphasize the unshakeable veracity of this esoteric science, the Siddha seals his promise with the ultimate sacred oaths: the poison-stained throat of Shiva and the grace of the Divine Mother.

Saying it must remain does not produce a remaining. Saying it must die is not why anything was created in the soil. Duration and death are not children of the sentence one prefers. The lord without shrinking has spoken five letters. You bow to them before you die, take them as medicine, and the word spoils. The five letters are not a last dose at the edge of death. Used that way, they lose the footing the bow was meant to keep.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar exposes the futility of human egoism regarding life and death. Longevity and mortality are not governed by human preferences or desperate bargains. The physical body is born from the soil and subject to inescapable cosmic laws of dissolution. Knowing this certainty, the Siddha warns against the common hypocrisy of living a careless, sensory life and then desperately uttering the Five Letters (நமசிவாய) on one's deathbed like a last-minute potion. The Panchakshara bestowed by the boundless Divine (சுருக்கமற்ற தம்பிரான்) is the eternal vehicle for continuous spiritual awakening during life; to reduce it to a panic-stricken medicine at the hour of death degrades its supreme transformative power and leaves the soul destitute.
