Agamas are recited from outside knowledge, and on the path the one straightness is missed. The printed verb there is compressed. Then a picture does the work. Curd already hangs in the pot at home, and someone enters the town looking for butter. How can one draw near people with no knowledge who live that way? The butter is sought abroad while it hangs in one's own pot. The Agamas are that trip into town.
The teaching
Sivavakkiyar delivers a devastating critique of bookish orthodoxy and externalized scriptural pedantry. Priests and scholars memorize and chant the Agamas with verbal fluency, yet remain utterly divorced from living inner awareness (அறிவிலே புறந்திருந்து). Bewildered by sectarian doctrines and convoluted rites, they miss the direct, uncomplicated truth of the Divine. Sivavakkiyar employs the unforgettable folk metaphor of a person having rich curd hanging right in the kitchen sling (உறி), yet roaming door-to-door through the village begging for butter. The Divine Self is already present within the seeker's own heart; those who ignore this inner reality to search for God in outer temples and distant dogmas are hopelessly foolish, making meaningful spiritual dialogue with them impossible.
