Desire stands in the pit of the womb and calls itself love. The people there are poor ones under a guru's pressure, and sinners at their sport. Against that pit the lines set the five letters reddened by the body, and the you that form itself strips away. Knowing has to happen twice, until it is taken. Lust in the place of birth, and letters that grow red in the body, are the two stands one is choosing between.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar confronts humanity's obsessive enslavement to carnal reproduction. Mortals burn with lust for the vaginal chasm (கருக்குழி), mistaking transient hormonal infatuation for true love, while living in spiritual poverty under the oppressive dogmas of mercenary gurus. The Siddha offers the antidote of internal alchemy: by persistently refining and transmuting the physical body (மெய்யினால் திருத்திருத்தி) through yogic practice, the sacred Five Letters (Panchakshara) ignite like a glowing crimson flame of pure Shivam. Through this double realization—witnessing the inner divine vibration and recognizing the transient nature of mortal form (உருக்கழிக்கும் உம்மை)—the soul breaks free from the womb's trap and attains spiritual liberation.

Birth in the soil, speech that will not stand as custom, and uncounted crores of gods saying mine and yours are set side by side as empty acts. The comparison is an eye covered while the pupil is already in the eye. Those gods, however numbered, wake by this eye. Covering the eye to go and find them repeats a blindness one puts on. Their waking is not elsewhere.

The teaching

A trenchant exposure of religious polytheism and spiritual blindness. Mortals waste their precious human births engaging in sectarian bickering, while mythologies depict millions of petty celestial gods quarreling over possessions, domains, and sectarian allegiances ('mine and yours'). Sivavakkiyar compares this outward search for divine favor to a person deliberately covering their eyes while the brilliant pupil (கண்மணி) sits right inside, fully capable of sight. The supreme Eye of awareness is the living witness within each being; even the myriad gods of heaven derive their existence and illumination from this single, foundational light of consciousness (இதன்கணால் விழிப்பதே). To ignore the inner divine eye and worship outer idols is tragic blindness.

Verse 79

  2. 2வெங்கலம் கவிழ்ந்தபோது வேணும் என்று பேணுவார்;
  1. 1Mangalam kavizhndhapodhu vaiththu vaiththu adukkuvaar
  2. 2Vengalam kavizhndhapodhu veenum enru peenuvaar;
  3. 3Namgalam kavizhndhapodhu naarum enru poduvaar
  4. 4Engalandhu ninramaayam ennamaayam iisanee.

These lines stand at the state of knowledge, and the knowledge is a comparison of pots. Clay, once tipped, is stood up and stacked again. Bronze, once tipped, is kept because someone still wants it. Our pot, once tipped, is thrown out because it smells. The body is the vessel that does not get the care given to clay and metal. The singer asks Ishvara what mystery this is, the eight mixed in. The smell is the excuse. The discarding is the fact.

The teaching

Titled 'The State of Wisdom' (அறிவு நிலை), this is one of Sivavakkiyar's most iconic and haunting meditations on the transience and ultimate worthlessness of the physical body (சரீர நிலையாமை). Society displays tender concern for material utensils: an earthenware pot is gently picked up and reused, and a valuable bronze vessel is polished and cherished. Yet the human body—so pampered with scents, garments, and status during life—is instantly deemed an offensive, rotting carcass the second breath departs, rushed to the burning ground with the cry "It stinks!" Sivavakkiyar appeals to Ishvara to witness this astonishing irony: how mortals anchor their entire ego in a fragile clay vessel that even a common bronze pot outlasts in social utility.

Great wealth has been heaped, and the sinners have taken hold of firewood. A gloss with this song reads the firewood as pride. They do not know the body burns together with that wood. Children, women, and kin, seen under illusion, are asked a plain question. When the slayer comes and calls, can any of them come along? The household is asked whether it can make the journey. The fire is already in the word, and they have not noticed whose body it uses.

The teaching

A fiery sermon against the vanity of wealth, domestic attachment, and egoism. People dedicate their lives to hoarding fortunes and feeding the firewood of arrogance (விறகு / pride), blind to the terrifying fact that this very firewood is what will consume their mortal frame on the funeral pyre. Sivavakkiyar dismantles the false refuge of family bonds—spouses, children, and relatives who flock around wealth. These relationships are the conjurations of worldly maya. When the inexorable messenger of death (மறலி) issues the final summons, the soul must embark on that solitary journey entirely alone; not a single loved one or gold coin can step forward to share the blow.

Verse 81

  1. 1Okkavandhu maadhudan serindhidaththil azhagiyee
  2. 2Oruvaraagi iruvaraagi ilamaipetra uurilee
  3. 3Akkanindhu konraisuudi ambalaththil aaduvaar
  4. 4Anjezhuththai odhidil aneegapaavam agalumee.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 81, this gloss explains a word in verse 80:

The lines before the dancer are compressed. Someone has come level with the woman, in a place of joining, and a town has gained youth by becoming one and becoming two. A figure looks, wears the konrai, and dances in the hall. If the five letters are chanted, many sins leave. Beauty and the dance are the setting. The sins are not argued down. They depart when the letters are recited.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar bridges the mystery of physical creation with the transcendental cosmic dance of Shiva. The biological union of man and woman, dissolving into unity and then emerging as two in the fertile vigor of youth, mirrors the eternal cosmic play of Shiva and Shakti. Yet physical intimacy and mortal vitality remain bound by karma unless consecrated by higher awareness. The true master of life is the Cosmic Dancer who adorns the golden konrai flower and dances in the space of consciousness (அம்பலம்). By internalizing the sacred Five Letters (Panchakshara), the seeker burns away the accumulated sins and karmic debris of biological existence, transforming carnal life into an expression of divine liberation.

Verse 82

  1. 1Maaduganru selvamum manaivimaindhar magizhavee
  2. 2Maadamaali kaippuraththil vaazhuginra naalilee
  3. 3Odivandhu kaaladhuudhar sadudhiyaaga modhavee
  4. 4Udalgidandhu uyirgazhanra unmaigandum unargiliir!

Cattle, calves, wealth, a wife and sons, all of them glad, and days spent at the side of a storied house: that is the whole security. The messengers of death run in and strike at once. The body lies there and the life peels off. This truth can be seen and still not known. The lines aim at the person who watched the peeling and went back to the side-room. The charge is the failure to know what was seen.

The teaching

A vivid, urgent wake-up call to the sleeping consciousness of humanity. Mortals construct fragile fortresses of domestic happiness, surrounding themselves with herds, riches, dutiful wives, and merry children within opulent, multi-storied palaces. Yet this entire tableau of security is shattered in a single fraction of a second when the messengers of Death (காலதூதர்) strike without warning. The body collapses into an inert heap while the life-spark peels away (உயிர் கழன்ற). Sivavakkiyar's anguish lies in human obstinacy: people attend funerals every day, watching corpses being carried away, yet immediately return to their petty desires as if they were immortal. Seeing death directly, they remain spiritually asleep.
