What can he call a thing that has no grammar and no mark a treatise could fix? The pure Tamil he is speaking has words, and this is a quality that has already crossed the word. Lightning draws back into its cloud and so becomes the flash. Inside him the lord is there and he is there, and aside from those two there is nothing. The inside has room for two and for no third.

The teaching

A sublime pinnacle of mystical poetry and Advaitic absorption. Sivavakkiyar confronts the ultimate limitation of human language: the Absolute possesses no defining characteristics, gender, form, or grammar (இலக்கணம் இலாதது). Even the most refined classical Tamil (செந்தமிழ்) falls silent before this wordless splendor. The Siddha offers the stunning metaphor of lightning: just as a bolt of lightning flashes from the cloud and withdraws into the thundercloud, merging into its luminous essence, so too the individual soul dissolves into the Divine. In the secret cavern of the heart (என்னகத்துள்), all cosmic multiplicity, dogmas, and third parties vanish; only the intimacy of the indwelling Lord and the awakened Self remains in unbroken, non-dual communion.

A banyan draws into a banyan seed and is the banyan by that drawing-in. You are told to ripen and reach enjoyment with no second seed. Then the rebuke: you do not heed the six arts, and you are humans without knowledge. Look: within you it has become the supreme Brahman. The Brahman is not a diploma waiting at the end of the six arts. It is what is already inside.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar utilizes the classical Upanishadic metaphor of the banyan tree (ஆல்) to demonstrate the latent divinity within the human soul. A colossal banyan tree, with its immense trunk and vast canopy, slumbers fully formed within a tiny seed; when it sprouts, it produces the entire tree without needing any external seed. Similarly, the infinite Supreme Brahman is already fully present in the spiritual seed of the human heart. Sivavakkiyar chides ignorant seekers who wander fruitlessly outside, blind to the six internal esoteric sciences of yoga. He commands them to look directly within (பாரும் இத்தை உம்முளே): the mortal vessel itself is already the blooming, glorious embodiment of the Supreme Brahman.

A mantra arises as a, and as the letters a and u. For whoever has known the letter, a rising birth is not here. The printed word is tight: birth that rises, or a count of births. Another mantra arises as sa. If it is set at tarparam, the station of the crown-whorl, then a, u, and ma are how it sits, and that sitting is Sivaya. The letters move to a station in the body.

The teaching

A masterstroke of Siddha mantra science connecting the breath to the destruction of rebirth. The primordial sound emerges as 'A' and 'U', embodying creation and sustenance. Whoever masters this foundational single letter (the Pranava / Ekakshara) annihilates the cycle of repeated earthly incarnations (எழுபிறப்பு இங்கிலை). Sivavakkiyar provides a precise yogic technique: take the life-breath mantra rising as 'Sa' (the natural inhalation/exhalation of Soham/Hamsa) and anchor it at the crown of the head (தற்பரம் / Sahasrara / Brahmarandhra). In that exalted spiritual zenith, the three components of Omkara (A, U, M) resolve into their transcendental source, resting majestically as the living reality of Sivayam.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 96, this gloss explains a word in verse 95:

The five letters are portioned on the body, in compressed spellings. Two na are the leg, the spoken ma the belly, two si the shoulder, the fine va the mouth, two ya the eye. Paired letters go to paired parts. They stand in a straightness pressed in, matched in rightness, and what stands that way is the five letters of Sivaya. The limbs are where the letters already are.

The teaching

The definitive anthropomorphic mapping of the Panchakshara onto the human microcosm (அங்க நியாசம் / Pinda Panchakshara). Sivavakkiyar shatters the orthodox notion that the Five Letters are merely an external chant to be muttered by the mouth. The human body itself is the living, breathing physical architecture of the mantra: the two legs are 'Na' (Prithvi / earth), the abdomen is 'Ma' (Apas / water), the shoulders and chest are 'Si' (Agni / fire), the mouth of expression is 'Va' (Vayu / air), and the eyes of vision are 'Ya' (Akasha / space). When the yogi realizes this sacred anatomical alignment (செவ்வை ஒத்து நின்றது), the physical body is no longer a trap of flesh, but the consecrated temple of the Five Letters, radiating the pure presence of Shiva.

Two and one are the root, inside a wheel that moves. You lie curled as three rings, small as a mark on the skin. A conch-sound rises with force and goes through the root channel. Sivaya sits in the city of the hall's lord. Sound travels between the mark-like coils and the city, and the name is what is seated when the sound has gone through. The you of the coils is addressed directly.

The teaching

A vivid, breathtaking depiction of Kundalini awakening through Nada yoga. In the dynamic base wheel (the Muladhara, where Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna converge), the primordial cosmic energy slumbers as the Kundalini serpent, coiled three-and-a-half times (மூன்று வளையமாய்), resting inconspicuous like a tiny birthmark. When awakened through pranayama and yogic intent, a mighty internal cosmic sound—the primordial resonance of the divine conch (சங்கின் ஓசை / Anahata Nada)—surges upward through the central Sushumna channel (மூலநாடி ஊடுபோய்). Ascending through the centers, it reaches the supreme city of the Divine Lord in the Sahasrara (அரங்கன் பட்டணம்), where it dissolves into supreme, transcendent stillness as the ever-abiding Sivayam.

  4. 4Udalulee ninaindhunalla unmaiyaanadhu unmaiyee!

A turtle roams the sea, climbs the shore, lays eggs, and the likeness says that when it roams the sea again, form comes to be. The comparison is compressed. Beside it is our light of the jewel-hall, staying in the sheath. Remembered in the body, that good truth is the truth. The turtle's leaving and returning is the figure. Remembering inside the body is the claim the figure carries.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar invokes the classical Siddha allegory of the turtle (கூர்ம நியாயம் / Kurma Dhyana). The mother turtle deposits her eggs on the distant sandy shore and swims back into the vast depths of the ocean; yet, solely through her unbroken, focused maternal concentration and love, the eggs incubate and hatch. In precisely the same manner, the brilliant Divine Light (மணியரங்க சோதி) dwells within the inner sheath of the human vessel. The seeker does not need to abandon the world or wander to physical shrines; by maintaining continuous, loving, and focused remembrance of the Divine within the core of the physical body (உடலுளே நினைந்து), spiritual rebirth occurs spontaneously, and the supreme Truth blossoms into living, undeniable reality.
