The world is said to have flowered from a blossomed essence taken as root. Then the opened flower brings delusion, something is seized and released, and the five senses with their organs fall to the earth in confusion. The singer turns to the Lord and asks what this glittering, swaying maya is.

The teaching

The cosmic enigma of Maya and the tragic entrapment of consciousness within physical embodiment. From the primordial seed of primal essence (தாது மூலம்), the entire phenomenal cosmos blossoms forth like a radiant, expansive flower. Yet this unfolding manifestation casts an intoxicating spell of delusion over the soul: caught in the whirlwind of worldly desires, humanity grasps at fleeting sensations only to discard them in exhaustion. Bewildered and disoriented by the clamor of the five sensory organs (புலன்கள் ஐந்தும் பொறி கலங்கி), living beings collapse helplessly into the dust of material existence. Sivavakkiyar calls upon the Lord in profound philosophical wonder, interrogating the dazzling, hypnotic nature of this cosmic illusion that perpetually entraps the unwary soul.

Verse 113

  1. 1Paaradanga ulladhum parandhavaanam ulladhum
  2. 2Oridamum inriyee onrininra onsudar
  3. 3Aaridamum inriyee agaththulum puraththulum
  4. 4Siiridangal kandavan sivandherindhu gnaaniyee!

Earth held in, sky spread wide, and between them a bright flame that is one without occupying any single place. A second line, its wording compressed, says the same flame is inside and outside without a place one could point to. The person who has seen those seats of glory is the knower who has discerned Siva.

The teaching

The radical omnipresence of the Divine Flame and the true hallmark of an enlightened Jnani. The Supreme Consciousness is not an idol imprisoned inside a stone sanctum, nor is it confined to any mythological paradise. It encompasses the entirety of the dense earth, permeates the vast reaches of the open sky, and blazes as a singular, undivided flame (ஒண்சுடர்) without being localized in any specific physical point. It resides simultaneously within the deepest cave of the human heart (அகத்துள்) and throughout the cosmic exterior (புறத்துள்), belonging to no exclusive sect or altar, yet sustaining everything. The illumined mystic who has directly perceived these glorious, sacred spaces within their own awareness is the true knower who has realized Shiva.

Verse 114

You carry an earthen vessel as a load, climb into the hill, and roam, and you say that deeds which cannot be reckoned will come to pass. The song then asks a hard question about company. How is one to live joined with people who will not, day after day, bow to our Lord until the head meets the ground?

The teaching

A stinging critique of theatrical asceticism versus authentic, ego-shattering surrender. Sivavakkiyar ridicules wandering ascetics and pseudo-yogis who shoulder earthen vessels, wander pointlessly across rugged mountains, and boast of their capacity to perform unimaginable, miraculous feats (எண்படாத காரியங்கள்). What spiritual value lies in arduous bodily mortification and miraculous claims if the heart remains swollen with pride? Authentic spirituality requires daily, radical humility—bowing one's head fully to the earth before the indwelling Lord of Grace. The poet questions how an authentic seeker of Truth can keep company with such pompous hypocrites who refuse to submit their pride in genuine, prostrate surrender.

Verse 115

  1. 1Naavilnuul azhindhadhum nalamgulam azhindhadhum
  2. 2Meevudheer azhindhadhum visaaram kuraindhadhum
  3. 3Paavigaal idhennamaayam vaamanaadu puusalaay
  4. 4Aaviyaar adangunaalil aivarum adanguvaar.

A list of ruins is read out: the text on the tongue, the good clan, the chariot one mounts, and inquiry itself, grown small. The sinners are asked what maya this is, a left-hand land in uproar, the printed name left unexpanded. The answer sits in the last line. On the day the living grow still, the five grow still with them.

The teaching

The inevitable, ruthless dissolution of worldly vanity, scriptural learning, and social prestige at the moment of death. When the final hour arrives, all human conceits vanish into dust: the sacred scriptures glibly recited on the tongue are silenced, aristocratic lineage and caste pretensions (நலம்குலம்) are obliterated, magnificent chariots and symbols of material wealth crumble, and dry intellectual debates cease. Sivavakkiyar confronts worldly fools absorbed in the chaotic squabbles and political uproars of earthly life (வாமநாடு பூசல்). On the day the vital soul-breath (ஆவி / prana) withdraws into stillness, the five rebellious senses naturally collapse—exposing the bitter truth that all external social distinctions and mental acrobatics were merely transient maya.

Verse 116

  1. 1Illai illai enruniir iyambuginra eezhaigaal,
  2. 2Illai enru ninradhonrai illai ennalaagumo?
  3. 3Illaialla onrumalla irandumonri ninradhai
  4. 4Ellaigandu kondapeer inippirappadhu illaiyee.

Poor ones keep declaring that it is nothing, it is nothing. The song asks whether the one thing that stands as nothing can be dismissed with that word. It is not nothing, and it is not merely one: the two stand as one. People who have seen that limit and taken it are not born again.

The teaching

The transcendence of nihilism, naive materialism, and dualism in the non-dual Absolute. Sivavakkiyar reproves spiritual paupers and shallow skeptics (ஏழைகாள்) who mechanically assert that God or Ultimate Reality is non-existent (இல்லை இல்லை) simply because the Absolute cannot be perceived by fleshy senses or grasped as an objective phenomenon. How can one deny the existence of That which stands as the very conscious witness behind all negation? The Supreme is neither a void of nothingness (இல்லை அல்ல) nor is it an objective, quantifiable entity among entities (ஒன்றுமல்ல); rather, transcendent consciousness and immanent manifestation stand indivisibly fused as one non-dual Reality (இரண்டும் ஒன்றி நின்றதை). Those who perceive this ultimate boundary of consciousness cross beyond the cycle of birth and death forever.

Verse 117

Four drumbeats of sound lead into one name. Kara, kara, the guardian of the watching age; pora, pora, the meritorious one who stood in the war; mara, mara, the one who shot all seven trees, the Sri broken by the line end; and then Rama, five times, the name itself. The verse is a roll of that name and of the acts the lines hang on it.

The teaching

The thunderous incantation of the Taraka mantra and the spiritual conquest of internal obstacles. Through an electrifying, rhythmic cadence of percussive seed syllables (கார, போர, மார), Sivavakkiyar invokes the archetype of the primordial protector who guards the cosmic ages (ஊழி காவலன்) and stands undefeated in the battlefield of life. Esoterically, the mythic piercing of the seven sal trees (மரங்கள் ஏழும் எய்த) signifies the yogic piercing of the seven bodily chakras or the total destruction of the seven foundational layers of karmic illusion. By culminating in the fivefold repetition of the sacred name of Rama, the poet reveals that this sound is not merely an external epic tale, but the vibrant, internal Taraka fire that consumes all mental impurities and establishes eternal peace.
