A person is described by what has dropped away. You stand unable to chant. Sleep and food are gone. Caste division is gone. You stand without doubt. In knowledge that has no flaw you have caught the mere sign, and you stand. Then you stand with nothing at all. The singer's question is tender and direct. You who stand like this, how is it that you still move?

The teaching

A deeply moving portrait of the Sahaja Samadhi and Jivanmukti (living liberation) of the realized Siddha. You have transcended the need for verbal chanting and scriptural recitation (ஓதொணாமல் நின்ற நீர்); your attachment to bodily sleep and material food has completely dropped away (உறக்கம் ஊணும் அற்ற நீர்); you have completely eradicated the toxic illusion of caste distinctions and social divisions (சாதிபேதம் அற்ற நீர்); you stand devoid of all skepticism and philosophical doubt (சங்கை இன்றி நின்ற நீர்). Anchored in flawless, unblemished pure Consciousness (கோதிலாத அறிவு), intuitively perceiving the subtle divine sign, you abide having surrendered all possessions and ego-attachments (ஏதும் இன்றி நின்ற நீர்). Sivavakkiyar asks with profound mystical tenderness: having dissolved completely into the unconditioned void of Being, how is it that you still walk and function within this mortal world?

Verse 192

  1. 1Pirandhapodhu kovanam ilangunuul kudumiyum
  2. 2Pirandhadhudan pirandhadho, pirangunuuli udangelaam
  3. 3Marandhanaalu veedhamum manaththulee udhiththadho?
  4. 4Nilambilandhu vaanidindhu ninradhuenna valliiree?

The marks of a ritual life are asked whether they were born with the child. At the moment of birth, was the loincloth there, the shining thread, the tuft of hair? The printed next line is compressed. Were they born along with the birth, the shining thread and the whole body? Did the four forgotten Vedas rise inside the mind? Earth splitting and the sky falling, the singer asks the capable one what this upheaval of custom is.

The teaching

One of Sivavakkiyar's most lethal and iconic attacks on the hereditary caste hierarchy and the myth of priestly supremacy. At the moment you emerged naked from your mother's womb (பிறந்த போது), did you arrive wearing a sacred loincloth, a shining sacred thread across your chest (இலங்கு நூல்), and a priestly tuft on your head (குடுமி)? Did these ritual markers of high-caste superiority grow naturally as part of your physical body? Did the four forgotten Vedas spontaneously dawn inside your infant mind at birth? Why then do you invent artificial social hierarchies and claim divine pedigree over fellow human beings? Sivavakkiyar boldly proclaims that if the artificial foundations of caste and ritual superstition were exposed and demolished, orthodoxy would cry out as though the earth were splitting open and the sky collapsing Nature creates all humans equal; caste is a man-made fraud.

Verse 193

  1. 1Thuruththiyundu kollanundu sornamaana sodhiyundu
  2. 2Thiruththamaam manaththilunnith thigazhauudha valliireel,
  3. 3Peruththadhuun ilangiyee pizhambadhaay virindhidum
  4. 4Niruththamaana sodhiyum niiyumalladhu illaiyee.

There is a bellows, there is a smith, and there is a radiance that is gold. If you can hold this in the mind that sets things right, and blow until it blazes, a great pillar will shine and spread as a vast mass. The printed பிழம்பதாய் names that spreading bulk. At the end only two things remain. The light that is the dance, and you. Nothing else is admitted into the workshop.

The teaching

The magnificent inner blacksmith forge of Vasi Yoga and non-dual awakening. Inside the human organism exists the bellows (துருத்தி = the lungs and pranic breath), the master blacksmith (கொல்லன் = the discriminating intellect / Kundalini practitioner), and the pure golden Radiance (சொர்ணமான சோதி = the indwelling Atman). If the yogi can steady the purified mind and blow the breath through the bellows with focused intensity (திகழ ஊத வல்லீரேல்), the inner fire blazes! From the Muladhara to the Sahasrara, a colossal pillar of radiant light (பெருத்த தூண் / the fiery Sushumna shaft / Lingodbhava) shines forth and expands into a boundless cosmic effulgence (பிழம்பதாய் விரிந்திடும்). In that supreme state of ecstatic absorption, all duality vanishes: there remains only the ecstatic Dancing Light of Shiva (நிருத்தமான சோதி) and your own real Self (நீயும்)—and absolutely nothing else in all existence! Tat Tvam Asi.

Verse 194

  1. 1Veedamittu mindhulakki mikkadhuupa thiipamaay
  2. 2Aadaruththu kuurupotta avargalpolum pannuriir
  3. 3Theedivaththa sembelaam thiralpadap parappiyee
  4. 4Poduginra putpapuusai puusaienna puusaiyee?

Costume, polished brightness, thick incense, and lamps open the scene. Then the people being imitated are named by what they did. They cut the goat and divided the shares. Red metal that was sought and heated is spread until it heaps. On top of that comes the flower worship. The singer asks what worship that worship is. The flowers sit on a cutting and a show.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar ruthlessly deconstructs external temple ceremonialism, animal sacrifice, and materialistic worship. Posing in ornate religious costumes (வேடமிட்டு), polishing brass and copper idols to a gleaming shine, and creating dense smoke with incense and oil lamps, ritualists put on a grand theatrical show. Yet, their cruelty mirrors the violent butchery of those who slaughter goats and parcel out portions of meat in village sacrifices They amass heaps of copper and worldly wealth around stone altars, mechanically scattering flowers (புட்ப பூசை) over lifeless metal and stone. Sivavakkiyar demands: What kind of true worship can this possibly be True worship is not a commercial spectacle or violent ritual performed over polished copper, but the silent offering of a surrendered heart at the altar of the living inner Divine.

Life is said to have sprouted from the tūmai, the source-fluid of this song, at the place where that fluid met its block. If you can look past the spot where you stand clinging, you meet a lord at the crown who is without blame and without burning. With hands toward the eight directions, the house where he was becomes that very place. Birth from the fluid is the beginning. The crown is where the looking arrives.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar tracks the soul's journey from maternal conception to supreme cranial liberation (Sahasrara). The embodied soul (சீவன்) first sprouted and came into being from maternal menstrual blood and uterine fluid (தூமை / முட்டுகண்ட தூமை = the ovum and generative fluids in the mother's womb). Humans remain trapped in bodily clinging, fixated on the physical origin and sexual attachments of birth. Yet, if the yogi has the spiritual capacity to look far beyond this place of biological bondage (கடந்து நோக்க வல்லீரேல்), they perceive the Supreme Lord (நாதன்) shining at the crown of the head (முடி / Sahasrara)—utterly free from all blame, mental projections, and dualistic pointing (திட்டும் அற்று சுட்டும் அற்று). At that pinnacle of realization, the boundaries of the individual body dissolve into the eight directions, and the entire infinite cosmos becomes the yogi's own eternal dwelling (இருந்த வீடதாகுமே).

Verse 196

  1. 1Arukkanodu somanum adhukkum appuraththilee
  2. 2Nerukkieeru thaaragai nerungininra neermaiyai
  3. 3Urukkior ezhuththumee oppilaadha veliyilee
  4. 4Irukkavalla peeralo inippirappadhu illaiyee.

The Project Madurai table prints this gloss beside verse 197. It explains a word in this song:

A gloss beside this song names arukkan as the sun and soman as the moon. Past the sun and the moon, and past even that beyond, stars that climb by pressing close stand crowded together, and their crowding is called a straightness. Melt that straightness to a single letter, in a space that has no comparison. The people who are able to remain there are asked as if the answer were already yes. For them there is no being born again.

The teaching

Cosmic Kundalini ascension beyond the sun, moon, and stars into the peerless Void (ஒப்பிலாத வெளி). In the subtle body, the solar channel (அருக்கன் / Pingala) and the lunar channel (சோமன் / Ida) are transcended. Ascending far beyond them through the Sushumna, past the crowded constellations of inner mystical stars (தாரகை / the luminous starry visions of the Ajna), the yogi melts all cosmic multiplicity and subtle structures into the singular primordial letter (ஓர் எழுத்து = Pranava / Sivam). Anchoring this unconditioned sound in the peerless, shoreless Void of Pure Consciousness (ஒப்பிலாத வெளி / Chidakasha), the yogi attains permanent absorption. Those rare masters who are capable of abiding immovably in this transcendent emptiness have eradicated every root of karma—for them, there is never another birth
