Costume, polished brightness, thick incense, and lamps open the scene. Then the people being imitated are named by what they did. They cut the goat and divided the shares. Red metal that was sought and heated is spread until it heaps. On top of that comes the flower worship. The singer asks what worship that worship is. The flowers sit on a cutting and a show.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar ruthlessly deconstructs external temple ceremonialism, animal sacrifice, and materialistic worship. Posing in ornate religious costumes (வேடமிட்டு), polishing brass and copper idols to a gleaming shine, and creating dense smoke with incense and oil lamps, ritualists put on a grand theatrical show. Yet, their cruelty mirrors the violent butchery of those who slaughter goats and parcel out portions of meat in village sacrifices They amass heaps of copper and worldly wealth around stone altars, mechanically scattering flowers (புட்ப பூசை) over lifeless metal and stone. Sivavakkiyar demands: What kind of true worship can this possibly be True worship is not a commercial spectacle or violent ritual performed over polished copper, but the silent offering of a surrendered heart at the altar of the living inner Divine.

Life is said to have sprouted from the tūmai, the source-fluid of this song, at the place where that fluid met its block. If you can look past the spot where you stand clinging, you meet a lord at the crown who is without blame and without burning. With hands toward the eight directions, the house where he was becomes that very place. Birth from the fluid is the beginning. The crown is where the looking arrives.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar tracks the soul's journey from maternal conception to supreme cranial liberation (Sahasrara). The embodied soul (சீவன்) first sprouted and came into being from maternal menstrual blood and uterine fluid (தூமை / முட்டுகண்ட தூமை = the ovum and generative fluids in the mother's womb). Humans remain trapped in bodily clinging, fixated on the physical origin and sexual attachments of birth. Yet, if the yogi has the spiritual capacity to look far beyond this place of biological bondage (கடந்து நோக்க வல்லீரேல்), they perceive the Supreme Lord (நாதன்) shining at the crown of the head (முடி / Sahasrara)—utterly free from all blame, mental projections, and dualistic pointing (திட்டும் அற்று சுட்டும் அற்று). At that pinnacle of realization, the boundaries of the individual body dissolve into the eight directions, and the entire infinite cosmos becomes the yogi's own eternal dwelling (இருந்த வீடதாகுமே).

A gloss beside this song names arukkan as the sun and soman as the moon. Past the sun and the moon, and past even that beyond, stars that climb by pressing close stand crowded together, and their crowding is called a straightness. Melt that straightness to a single letter, in a space that has no comparison. The people who are able to remain there are asked as if the answer were already yes. For them there is no being born again.

The teaching

Cosmic Kundalini ascension beyond the sun, moon, and stars into the peerless Void (ஒப்பிலாத வெளி). In the subtle body, the solar channel (அருக்கன் / Pingala) and the lunar channel (சோமன் / Ida) are transcended. Ascending far beyond them through the Sushumna, past the crowded constellations of inner mystical stars (தாரகை / the luminous starry visions of the Ajna), the yogi melts all cosmic multiplicity and subtle structures into the singular primordial letter (ஓர் எழுத்து = Pranava / Sivam). Anchoring this unconditioned sound in the peerless, shoreless Void of Pure Consciousness (ஒப்பிலாத வெளி / Chidakasha), the yogi attains permanent absorption. Those rare masters who are capable of abiding immovably in this transcendent emptiness have eradicated every root of karma—for them, there is never another birth

  2. 2Kolavattam muunrumaay kulaindhalaindhu ninraniir
  3. 3Olaivatta manrulee navinragnaanam aagilo
  4. 4Eelavattam aagiyee irundhadhee sivaayamee.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 197, this gloss explains a word in verse 196:

On the root-circle, five letters have sprouted, and you have stood upon them scattered as three circling ornaments, disordered and drifting. The third line sets a condition in a hall of palm-leaf circles, knowledge that was recited there. If that comes to be, what remains as the ஏல circle is Sivayam. ஏலவட்டம் is printed as its own name, and its exact sense beside the other circles is uncertain. The five letters and the scattered three are what the verse is trying to still.

The teaching

Mastering the subtle mandalas and establishing stability in the Five Letters (Panchakshara). Upon the foundational circle of the Muladhara (மூல வட்டம்), the Five Letters have sprouted as the root matrix of life. Yet, human consciousness remains scattered, tossed, and adrift across the three shifting mandalas (the circles of Sun, Moon, and Fire, or the three states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep). If, instead of remaining scattered, the seeker internalizes the sacred wisdom inscribed in the subtle palm-leaf hall of the heart (ஓலைவட்ட மன்றுளே நவின்ற ஞானம்), all scattered geometric energies unify into a harmonious, unbroken circular wholeness (ஏலவட்டம்). In that stabilized state of enlightened consciousness, everything is realized as the eternal, immovable presence of Sivayam.

Verse 198

  1. 1Sukkilath thisaiyulee suronidhaththin vaasalul
  2. 2Muththusaram ettulee muulaadhaara varaiyilee
  3. 3Achchamatra savvulee ariaran ayanumaay
  4. 4Uchcharikkum mandhiram unmaiyee sivaayamee.

The name is placed in the body's origin. In the direction of semen, inside the gate of the uterine blood, among eight strings of pearls, on the mountain of the root-support, inside the membrane that has no fear, Hari, Hara, and Aya are present together. The mantra uttered there is, in truth, Sivayam. The three stand at this gate. The five-letter name is what the line says is spoken at the root.

The teaching

The sanctification of biological conception and the primordial presence of the Trinity at the Muladhara. Within the meeting point of the father's semen (சுக்கிலம்) and the mother's ovum/blood (சுரோணிதம்), inside the eight subtle pearl-strands of vital essence and the primordial chamber of the Muladhara (மூலாதார வரை), consciousness takes root. Within the fearless, protective embryonic membrane (அச்சமற்ற சவ்வு), the cosmic functions of creation, preservation, and dissolution—personified as Hari (Vishnu), Haran (Shiva), and Ayan (Brahma)—are simultaneously present. And the primordial, ceaseless mantra that is naturally uttered at this sacred root of all embodied life is, in absolute truth, the beginningless name: Sivayam! Sivavakkiyar demonstrates that the Five Letters are not an external human chant, but the very biological and cosmic pulsation that breathes life into the womb.

Verse 199

  1. 1Puuvumniirum enmanam porundhugoyil enulam
  2. 2Aaviyodi lingamaay agandamengum aagilum
  3. 3Meevuginra aivarum vilangudhuupa thiipamaay
  4. 4Aaduginra kuuththanukkor andhisandhi illaiyee.

Flower and water are the mind. The temple that fits is the inner. Though the linga moves with the breath and becomes the undivided whole everywhere, the five who come to dwell there shine as incense and lamp. For the dancer who is dancing, there is no dusk rite and no dawn rite. The offerings have moved inside the one who dances.

The teaching

One of the most glorious and celebrated zeniths of Sivavakkiyar's Siddha poetry, completely internalizing all temple worship into the living sanctuary of consciousness. External flowers and ritual bathing waters are replaced by the purified mind (பூவும் நீரும் என் மனம்); the true, fitting temple is one's own heart and inner awareness (பொருந்து கோயில் என் உளம்). The Shiva Linga is not a carved stone pillar, but the vibrant life-breath (ஆவி / Prana) dancing through the body and expanding into the boundless, undivided cosmos (அகண்டம் எங்கும்). The five senses and the five elements dwell as the glowing incense and shining sacred lamps of this internal liturgy. For the supreme Cosmic Dancer (ஆடுகின்ற கூத்தன் / Nataraja) who ceaselessly performs His ecstasy within the awakened soul, there is no dawn ritual and no dusk ritual (அந்தி சந்தி இல்லையே)—all arbitrary temporal boundaries of orthodox worship dissolve into the eternal, uninterrupted liturgy of living awareness.
