The name is placed in the body's origin. In the direction of semen, inside the gate of the uterine blood, among eight strings of pearls, on the mountain of the root-support, inside the membrane that has no fear, Hari, Hara, and Aya are present together. The mantra uttered there is, in truth, Sivayam. The three stand at this gate. The five-letter name is what the line says is spoken at the root.

The teaching

The sanctification of biological conception and the primordial presence of the Trinity at the Muladhara. Within the meeting point of the father's semen (சுக்கிலம்) and the mother's ovum/blood (சுரோணிதம்), inside the eight subtle pearl-strands of vital essence and the primordial chamber of the Muladhara (மூலாதார வரை), consciousness takes root. Within the fearless, protective embryonic membrane (அச்சமற்ற சவ்வு), the cosmic functions of creation, preservation, and dissolution—personified as Hari (Vishnu), Haran (Shiva), and Ayan (Brahma)—are simultaneously present. And the primordial, ceaseless mantra that is naturally uttered at this sacred root of all embodied life is, in absolute truth, the beginningless name: Sivayam! Sivavakkiyar demonstrates that the Five Letters are not an external human chant, but the very biological and cosmic pulsation that breathes life into the womb.

Verse 199

  2. 2Aaviyodi lingamaay agandamengum aagilum
  3. 3Meevuginra aivarum vilangudhuupa thiipamaay
  4. 4Aaduginra kuuththanukkor andhisandhi illaiyee.

Flower and water are the mind. The temple that fits is the inner. Though the linga moves with the breath and becomes the undivided whole everywhere, the five who come to dwell there shine as incense and lamp. For the dancer who is dancing, there is no dusk rite and no dawn rite. The offerings have moved inside the one who dances.

The teaching

One of the most glorious and celebrated zeniths of Sivavakkiyar's Siddha poetry, completely internalizing all temple worship into the living sanctuary of consciousness. External flowers and ritual bathing waters are replaced by the purified mind (பூவும் நீரும் என் மனம்); the true, fitting temple is one's own heart and inner awareness (பொருந்து கோயில் என் உளம்). The Shiva Linga is not a carved stone pillar, but the vibrant life-breath (ஆவி / Prana) dancing through the body and expanding into the boundless, undivided cosmos (அகண்டம் எங்கும்). The five senses and the five elements dwell as the glowing incense and shining sacred lamps of this internal liturgy. For the supreme Cosmic Dancer (ஆடுகின்ற கூத்தன் / Nataraja) who ceaselessly performs His ecstasy within the awakened soul, there is no dawn ritual and no dusk ritual (அந்தி சந்தி இல்லையே)—all arbitrary temporal boundaries of orthodox worship dissolve into the eternal, uninterrupted liturgy of living awareness.

Verse 200

After the dancer has been left without a dusk rite or a dawn rite, these lines turn to knowing. The speaker came to know you only once form had melted. Presence and hiding weigh the same, because the mind had already been full of you the whole time. When the two stood with their forms melted together, the question draws close: were you and I not one? The clarity that follows has a name. Once the sacred has mingled and passed, what stands clear is Sivayam.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar articulates the zenith of Advaitic (non-dual) union, where the boundary between the individual seeker and the Divine entirely dissolves. As long as consciousness is anchored to external forms and the dualistic illusion of individuality, God remains a distant concept. But once gross embodiment and subtle ego melt together in the furnace of inner contemplation (உருக்கலந்த பின்னல்), true gnosis dawns. Whether the Divine appears manifest or remains concealed is of no consequence to the realized Siddha whose awareness is continually steeped in the sacred presence. In this state of total unitive absorption, subject and object merge into an indivisible whole—"were you and I not one?" When divine grace intermingles and dissolves all worldly perceptions, what shines forth in immaculate clarity is the pure essence of Sivayam.

Sivayam, just named, is now held inside its five letters. Clarity there is said to be enough for a person to stand as a god, and enough to rule the sky. The same clarity is then said to have grasped a sky-substance, and that grasp is called the truth. Power is piled up so that it can come to rest on one thing: the truth taken by becoming clear within those five letters.

The teaching

This verse extols the transformative power of the Five Letters (Panchakshara / Sivayam) as the supreme cosmic key to liberation. Sivavakkiyar emphasizes that Sivayam is not an ordinary verbal recitation, but the subtle vibrational matrix through which mortal consciousness is transmuted into divine awareness. To attain genuine cognitive and spiritual clarity (தெளிதல்) within these five sacred syllables elevates the seeker above mortal limitations, awakening godlike consciousness and granting mastery over the limitless expanse of spiritual skies (வானம் ஆளலாம்). By penetrating into the inner sanctum of these letters, the Siddha grasps the transcendental celestial reality (வான்பொருள்)—the unconditioned truth of Brahman—rendering all outer rituals, theological disputations, and external dogmas obsolete.

A pot becomes the figure for a life still tossing. The five draw back into a false pot, and pleasure is flung about. This inert body and its senses toss the way waves toss on water. Then the figure turns. A pot that has taken up water can sit still, and this body, once it has taken up Siva, sits glad and settled. What the song measures is the thing the pot has drawn in.

The teaching

Employing the vivid Siddha metaphor of the earthen water-pot (குடம்), Sivavakkiyar illustrates the transformation of the human vehicle from worldly turmoil to divine stillness. An empty, unanchored pot tossed upon turbulent waves is buffeted helplessly, mirroring the unenlightened human frame (இச்சடம்) whose senses (இந்திரியங்கள்) retreat into the vessel of illusion while life is chaotically flung about by sensory indulgences and desires. However, when that very same vessel is submerged into the depths and filled to its brim with water, it becomes perfectly stable, settled, and impervious to the churning surface. In the same way, when the body draws in and saturates itself with the supreme nectar of Shiva-consciousness (சிவத்தை மொண்டு), all sensory agitations cease, karmic turbulence subsides, and the yogi rests in unshakable inner stillness and ecstatic peace.

The life is still in the air, a kite with its string, and the singer wants it tied. Experience is the teacher here: look with what you have already learned, and put on a knot that will hold. The kite must not be struck. The life must not be let go. The one to be bound is named without romance. It is the thief who already knows how to steal away, and the command is to bind that thief tight.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar turns to the urgent discipline of Vasi Yoga and the mastery of the wandering life-breath. He compares the restless soul (ஜீவன் / சீவன்) to a kite soaring erratically in the gusty winds of sensory distraction, tethered only by the fragile string of mortal breath. Through seasoned experiential wisdom (பட்டறிவு), the yogi must not allow this vital force to flutter away or snap its cord; rather, one must bind it with an unyielding knot (படுமுடிச்சு)—the yogic lock of breath retention (Kumbhaka) and focused interior awareness. The restless ego-mind is an elusive master thief (கள்வன்) that secretly robs the soul of its divine heritage. The practitioner is commanded to seize this elusive thief without violence or negligence, binding it firmly within the central channel of spiritual illumination.
