Titles are set out and left empty. What is it, the line asks, to be a lord? There is a mantra someone understood and then recited. There is a man who came as cool grace and learned every purana. There is one who praised the cause of Kannan's coming. The singer will not rank these accomplishments. The closing question is blunt: what is able to be, and which mantra is the true one? Stories learned and an advent praised still wait on a name that has not been answered.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar boldly interrogates the vanity of religious titles, mythological erudition, and dogmatic authority. What truly makes someone a supreme master or venerable lord (அண்ணல்)? Is it merely memorizing sacred incantations, mastering all eighteen Puranas, adopting an air of cool piety, or eloquently eulogizing the avatars of Vishnu? The Siddha dismisses all intellectual scholasticism and theological pedigree as superficial theater. He demands of the seeker: what is actually attainable through living experience, and what constitutes the authentic, living mantra? Outward puranic tales and ritual recitations are dead letters unless the practitioner realizes that unconditioned inner Word which instantly terminates the root of mortal ignorance.

Verse 259

  1. 1Ulladho purambadho uyirodungi ninridam
  2. 2Mellavandhu kittiniir vinavaveenum engiriir?
  3. 3Ulladhum purambadhum oththapodhu naadhamaam
  4. 4Kallavaasa laiththirandhu kaanaveenum mandhiram.

Where does the life-breath stand once it has drawn itself in: inside, or outside? The answer people give is a matter of manners. Come softly, draw near, and ask. The song waits until inside and outside match, and then names nada, the sounding. The mantra is something that has to be seen, and the way is a hidden door opened. The printed line crowds the words for that door. The act is still plain: open it and look, rather than inquire from the threshold.

The teaching

A masterclass in the esoteric mystery of breath (Pranayama) and non-dual awakening. Seekers timidly approach the master asking where the vital life-breath (உயிர்) ultimately dissolves: does it abide inside the physical form or outside in the cosmic ether? Sivavakkiyar cuts through their hesitation by revealing the foundational law of Vasi yoga: when the internal inhalation and external exhalation are harmonized into absolute motionless equilibrium (உள்ளதும் புறம்பதும் ஒத்தபோது), the primordial cosmic vibration (நாதம் / Nada) reverberates throughout one's being. To directly perceive this living mantra of Truth, one cannot remain a passive philosophical spectator; one must unlock the deceitful, secret doorway (கள்ளவாசல் / the concealed Sushumna channel and crown portal) through rigorous yogic breath control.

Verse 260

  1. 1Aaralaindhu puudhamaay alavidaadha yoniyum
  2. 2Paaramaana theevarum pazhudhilaadha paasamum
  3. 3Oronaadha andamum ulogaloga logamum
  4. 4Seeravendhu poyirundha theegameedhu seppumee?

The verse piles a world and then burns the one who might report it. Elements appear in a compressed opening phrase, with a source that cannot be measured, gods who weigh like a burden, a bond with no flaw, a universe that will not be made one, and worlds stacked on worlds. Against that stands a body that joined, burned, and was gone. What remains for that body to say? The opening count is uncertain in the print. The ash has nothing left to tell.

The teaching

An unsparing critique of ostentatious religiosity, communal hypocrisy, and mechanical piety. Sivavakkiyar questions the crowds who gather in elaborate sectarian costumes (கூடி நின்ற கோலம்), calculating the geographical distances of their arduous pilgrimages (ஓடி நின்ற தூரம்) as badges of spiritual merit. What real spiritual good is gained when one fails to seek the Divine within the living breath-channels (நாடி) of one's own organism? Simply singing devotional hymns with the throat (பாடி நின்ற பத்தர்) without an inward alchemical transformation does not secure the intimate grace of the Divine. The Lord does not dispense grace to superficial, external pageantry; He reveals Himself only to those who cease their restless running and realize the silent presence within the body.

Verse 261

  1. 1Ennagaththul ennainaan engunaadi odineen?
  2. 2Ennagaththul ennainaan arindhilaadha thaagaiyaal
  3. 3Ennagaththul ennainaan arindhumee therindhapin
  4. 4Ennagaththul ennaianri yaadhumonru millaiyee.

The search is a circle, and the singer admits he ran it. Where, inside himself, did he run while looking for himself? The running had a cause: he did not know himself in the place where he already was. After that knowing arrives and turns into clear sight, the circle closes the other way. Inside him, other than himself, there is not one thing. The verse sends no one to a shrine. It ends the hunt by finding that the hunter was the country he was searching.

The teaching

The Siddha dismantles the triple pillars of orthodox religious delusion: mechanical ritualism, sectarian theatricality, and divisive dogma. What purpose is served by repetitive outward pujas (பரிவு செய்த பூசை) and elaborate sacred disguises (வேஷம்)—robes, ash, and beads—which only feed spiritual vanity? Why do scholars endlessly babble, erecting rigid caste barriers and sectarian schisms (பிரிவு செய்த பேதம்) in the name of God? Sivavakkiyar turns the mind toward the only attainment that matters: knowing the Pure Consciousness that knows (அறிவறிந்த நன்மை). This awareness is beginningless (அனாதி), unconditioned, and free from all artificial social classifications and ritualistic pretense.

Verse 262

  1. 1Vinnininru minnezhundhu minnodungu maarupol

  3. 3Kannininru kannildhonrum kanniri vilaamaiyaal
  4. 4Ennulninra ennaiyum yaanarindhadhu illaiyee.

Lightning leaves the sky and sinks back, and that flash figures a Lord who is thought of while already standing inside. The next figure is the eye. What appears in the eye comes from the eye, and the printed phrase says the eye has no knowing of its own. That phrase is compressed. Even the self that stood within, the speaker has not known. Nearness and recognition come apart, the way a flash is gone as soon as it is seen.

The teaching

A sublime esoteric exposition of subtle pranic anatomy and Kundalini awakening. The beginningless central nadi (மூலநாடி / Sushumna) courses through the living temple of the body. Within its subtle depths, the supreme divine Mother-consciousness, Manonmani, shines as an unwavering lamp, kindled by the sacred fire of regulated breath (வாசியான வன்னி). Instead of dissipating vital life-force through the two restless outward gateways (the Ida and Pingala nostrils), the adept channels the dual breath into the central channel, where it pours down as a downpour of immortal nectar (மாரி). Sivavakkiyar asks: when the soul awakens from the deep, hypnotic dream of mortal worldliness (கனா விழித்த போது), what magnificent, incomparable vision unfolds? It is the blinding, pristine revelation of the Self as Pure Effulgence.

Verse 263

  1. 1Adakkinum adakkonaadha ambalaththin uudupoy
  2. 2Adakkinum adakkonaadha anpirukkum ennulee
  3. 3Kidakkinum irukkinum kileesamvandhu irukkinum
  4. 4Nadakkinum idaividaadha naadhasang kolikkumee.

Love will not stay held down. Even restrained, it cannot be restrained, and it passes through the open court. The same pair of words returns, and this time the unrestrainable thing is love inside the speaker. Posture does not interrupt it. Lying down, sitting, or living with affliction that has come to stay, the conch of nada keeps sounding. It sounds while one walks, and it leaves no gap. The divine here is a sound that does not take a break for the body's arrangements or for pain.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar conducts a penetrating inquiry into authentic spiritual attainment versus illusory pretensions. What is genuine mystical vision (காட்சி)? It is not seeing psychic apparitions, but resting completely immaculate and free from all mental blemishes (களங்கமற்று நின்றதோ). What is true majesty (மாட்சி)? It is the power that shatters the encircling snare of cosmic illusion (மாயை), rather than worldly dominion. What is authentic spiritual sovereignty (ஆட்சி)? It is resting in experiential wisdom that transcends rote verbal explanations. And what is the supreme esoteric secret (சூட்சி)? It is the sacred alchemical union wherein the three inner luminaries—the fires of the Sun, the Moon, and Agni within the subtle channels—merge into the single, blazing effulgence of non-dual Reality.
