The voice turns on the speaker's own past and counts it in the same tired question. How many flowers did I pluck and throw away, how many mantras did I recite in wastelands, how many waters did I pour while roaming as a stubborn fool, how many Siva temples came crowding round again? The questions are an inventory of outward religion that kept multiplying. Temples arriving in a crowd is the last item, and the line still asks what that number was worth.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar reflects upon his own past life of mechanical ritualism with enlightened disillusionment (அறிவு நிலை). How many millions of flowers did he pick and discard in worship? How many mantras did he chant into the empty air? How many gallons of water did he pour over idols as a stubborn, blind pilgrim, circling endless Shiva shrines? He exposes the utter futility of external ceremonies that consume the seeker's life without awakening the divine light within.

Verse 27

  4. 4Kandagoyil theyvam enru kaiyeduppa thillaiyee.

Those who have realized where the king of the celestials dwells are addressed, and then cornered. Who is able to know that nature which was known of old? They have no way to say anything other than the meaning the opened Veda already holds. And there is no raising of the hands toward a god on the claim that it is the deity of a temple one has seen. Knowing cancels the public gesture. The temple-god as a thing one points to is what this knower leaves undone.

The teaching

The mark of the true knower (Jnani) who has discovered the living God within. Those enlightened sages who have realized the true abode of the Supreme within their own consciousness have completely transcended external forms. Having grasped the unspoken inner essence of the Vedas, they feel no need to fold their hands or bow before localized idols in brick-and-mortar temples claiming that God is confined to that specific spot. Realization replaces external gestures with unshakeable inner communion.

Verse 28

  1. 1Thuuram thuuram thuuram enru solluvaargal sombargal

  3. 3Uurunaadu kaadumodi uzhanrudheedum uumaigaal!
  4. 4Neeradhaaga ummulee arindhunarndhu nillumee!

Lazy people, the singer says, are the ones who call the goal far, far, far. What they push into the distance is a supreme that has already spread as earth and as sky, everywhere. He calls mutes the ones who run through town, country, and forest, wandering and searching. The order at the end is plain and close: in a straight way, know it within yourselves, realize it, and stand. Distance is treated as an excuse the idle tell. The search on foot is the dumbness.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar calls out spiritual laziness and self-deception. It is only the idle and undisciplined who make excuses, claiming the Divine is distant, unapproachable, and far away (தூரம் தூரம்). In reality, the Supreme permeates all earth and sky, intimately near. Those who frantically run through towns, nations, and forests are like spiritual mutes searching everywhere except where God actually is: within. The Siddha commands the seeker to stand firm and directly know the Divine within their own consciousness.

Verse 29

  4. 4Engumaagi ninranaamam naamamindha naamamee!

Gold is one thing and the shape worked from it is another, and the verse says the lord is like that in nature. Red-eyed Mal and Isan stood in their splendor within us: two forms, and the substance inside. The people addressed are bright talkers. The word for what they speak is unusual in the print, and it is taken here as their wrangling. Against that talk the verse sets a name that has become everywhere. This name, it says, is the name.

The teaching

The fundamental unity of divine essence beneath superficial theological names and forms. Just as pure gold is a single continuous substance while ornaments fashioned from it take diverse names and shapes, so too are Vishnu (Mal) and Shiva (Isan) manifestations of one underlying divine reality residing within our own hearts. Sectarian zealots waste their lives arguing over supremacy, blind to the universal truth that the all-pervading Name is one single undivided vibration.

Verse 30

  2. 2விருப்பமொடு நீர்குளிக்கும் வேதவாக்கியம் கேளுமின்;

Daily religion is described at close range. Light the fire, pour the ghee, and with eagerness bathe in water, day after day, and hear what the Veda says. The pivot is a condition. If you can hold fire and water in mind and speak of them as they are inside you, then a question opens: does union follow, a going-after of the light that has no shrinking? Outer fire and outer bathing stay in their place. The light without limit is tied to knowing those two elements within.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar internalizes the Vedic fire ritual (Homa) and ceremonial water baths. Chanting scripture while stoking external fires with ghee and plunging into river water daily is mere surface piety. If the practitioner can recognize and awaken the subtle cosmic fire (Kundalini / Agni) and nectar (Soma / Amrita) within their own physical organism, they directly merge with the infinite, peerless Light (சுருக்கமற்ற சோதி) that knows no diminution.

Verse 31

  4. 4Veettagaarar kusugusuppaik kuuppidaa muginjadhee.

The Project Madurai table prints this gloss beside verse 32. It explains a word in this song:

The lord in this verse is hard to fetch by the usual means. He is absent from song, he is lord of the highest world, he belongs to no country, and his half is the woman. What people bring him is a mantra mumbled with the mouth buried, gathered softly, muttered low. That muttering is likened to a hunter's drawstring pouch. It does not call him. It sniffs. Secretive chanting is made to look like a hunt that never hails its object.

The teaching

A sharp mockery of hypocritical, secretive religiosity. The Supreme Lord—who belongs to no specific country, is married to the inner feminine power (Shakti), and defies superficial hymns—cannot be won through muffled, whispering prayers uttered behind cupped hands. Sivavakkiyar likens such secretive, muffled muttering to the sneaky whispering of hunters stalking prey in the forest, exposing it as mechanical artifice devoid of true spiritual openness.
