Gold is one thing and the shape worked from it is another, and the verse says the lord is like that in nature. Red-eyed Mal and Isan stood in their splendor within us: two forms, and the substance inside. The people addressed are bright talkers. The word for what they speak is unusual in the print, and it is taken here as their wrangling. Against that talk the verse sets a name that has become everywhere. This name, it says, is the name.

The teaching

The fundamental unity of divine essence beneath superficial theological names and forms. Just as pure gold is a single continuous substance while ornaments fashioned from it take diverse names and shapes, so too are Vishnu (Mal) and Shiva (Isan) manifestations of one underlying divine reality residing within our own hearts. Sectarian zealots waste their lives arguing over supremacy, blind to the universal truth that the all-pervading Name is one single undivided vibration.

Verse 30

  2. 2விருப்பமொடு நீர்குளிக்கும் வேதவாக்கியம் கேளுமின்;

  4. 4Surukkamatra sodhiyaith thodarndhuguudal aagumo!

Daily religion is described at close range. Light the fire, pour the ghee, and with eagerness bathe in water, day after day, and hear what the Veda says. The pivot is a condition. If you can hold fire and water in mind and speak of them as they are inside you, then a question opens: does union follow, a going-after of the light that has no shrinking? Outer fire and outer bathing stay in their place. The light without limit is tied to knowing those two elements within.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar internalizes the Vedic fire ritual (Homa) and ceremonial water baths. Chanting scripture while stoking external fires with ghee and plunging into river water daily is mere surface piety. If the practitioner can recognize and awaken the subtle cosmic fire (Kundalini / Agni) and nectar (Soma / Amrita) within their own physical organism, they directly merge with the infinite, peerless Light (சுருக்கமற்ற சோதி) that knows no diminution.

Verse 31

  1. 1Paattillaadha paramanaip paramaloga naadhanai

The lord in this verse is hard to fetch by the usual means. He is absent from song, he is lord of the highest world, he belongs to no country, and his half is the woman. What people bring him is a mantra mumbled with the mouth buried, gathered softly, muttered low. That muttering is likened to a hunter's drawstring pouch. It does not call him. It sniffs. Secretive chanting is made to look like a hunt that never hails its object.

The teaching

A sharp mockery of hypocritical, secretive religiosity. The Supreme Lord—who belongs to no specific country, is married to the inner feminine power (Shakti), and defies superficial hymns—cannot be won through muffled, whispering prayers uttered behind cupped hands. Sivavakkiyar likens such secretive, muffled muttering to the sneaky whispering of hunters stalking prey in the forest, exposing it as mechanical artifice devoid of true spiritual openness.

Printed in the source at the start of verse 32, this gloss explains a word in verse 31:

A seeing happens, and it is compared to gathering tender coconut water in a red palm: the sweetness is already in the tree, and the work is to take it there. In that way the lord came, entered the heart, and made a temple of it. The next line repeats the arrival and adds the consequence. Once that inner temple is taken, the mouth stays shut before the people of the world. The vision is told as real, and it is kept from display.

The teaching

The intimate, quiet nature of direct mystical vision (தரிசனம்). Just as sweet water naturally gathers inside a tender green coconut without any visible inlet, the Supreme Lord silently entered the poet's heart and transformed it into His living temple. Once this profound inner sanctum is consecrated by the Lord's presence, the mystic falls into reverent silence, having no need to boast, preach, or argue before the worldly crowd.

Verse 33

Fools are shown at work on an image. They go about it crosswise, polish a gem, carry the bee's leftover, honey told as spit, and pour it on a stone that has been cut. That is worship of a carved god, told so the offering looks slightly foul. Another god, one who differs, looks on the speaker and knows him. The last line is compressed. Read straight, it asks whether the matter is settled by dividing shares, and says what took place is the placing of the guru's feet.

The teaching

A biting exposure of idol worship and ritual absurdity (அறிவு நிலை). Pompous ritualists polish cold stones, gather honey (the spit of bees), and pour it over chiseled statues, imagining they are pleasing God. Meanwhile, the true living Lord looks within and knows the heart of the seeker. External rituals cannot resolve the soul's bondage; only the grace of the Satguru placing his sacred feet upon the seeker's consciousness dissolves ignorance and liberates the soul.

Verse 34

  1. 1Koyilaavadhu eedhadaa? kulangalaavadhu eedhadaa?
  2. 2Koyilum kulangalum kumbidum kulaamaree!
  3. 3Koyilum manaththulee kulangalum manaththulee!
  4. 4Aavadhum azhivadhum illai illai illaiyee.

The questions are rude on purpose, tossed at a man of family. What, exactly, is a temple? What are the tanks? He is then named as the one who bows to both. The correction is short: the temple is in the mind, and the tanks are in the mind. The last line widens that correction into a denial of process. Arising is absent and perishing is absent, said three times. Sacred places located in the mind are kept from being buildings that come to be and fall down.

The teaching

A radical demolition of external sacred geography. Sivavakkiyar challenges the orthodox: What is a temple building? What is a sacred bathing tank? The true temple is the purified mind; the true sacred tank is the tranquil heart. External buildings are constructed and eventually crumble to dust, but the inner sanctuary of consciousness knows neither birth nor destruction To worship the mind as the altar of God is to step into eternity.
