In the corner that has seen the gate, the five who shine take their seat. Something draws near after seeing a form, and something dwells as the king of the head. A bee of the body sees, and something goes to the inner town. Something goes saying it will leap, and something flies. The line's heap of goings has one name at the end: what flew is Sivayama.

The teaching

Within the subtle angles of the bodily gateways, the five sensory agents and vital pranas hold court, initially seducing the ego into chasing transient shadows and playing the monarch over a fragile, mortal kingdom. But when the discerning mystic bee of consciousness (காய வண்டு) discovers the nectar of internal bliss, it abandons outer trivialities and journeys to the primordial origin (கருவூர்—the timeless source transcending physical birth and death). Leaping beyond the gravitational pull of bodily identification and mental agitation, all illusory bonds shatter, and consciousness takes flight into the infinite, liberated expanse of Sivayanama.

Verse 369

  4. 4Sirandhuninra monamee thelindhadhee sivaayamee.

Flight returns, this time at the moment of renouncing, still on the path of the flowing town. What was forgotten rests on the hand of the sky-dwellers, at a compressed phrase about a completed bite. What was born, in the hour of death, is set below without an affliction being planted. The silence that stands excellent, and what has become clear, is Sivayama. Forgetting, dying, and clarity share one name.

The teaching

The soul achieves true liberation and takes flight through the surging spinal channel (பாய்ச்சலூர்) the very instant mental attachments, desires, and sectarian dogmas are renounced from within. The grasping hands of worldly ambition and religious ritualism are forgotten and left behind. By consciously dying to the false ego while yet living in this physical form (ஜீவன் முக்தி), the seeker is truly born into the deathless state, permanently sheltered from descending into the mire of worldly suffering and rebirth. In this supreme condition, the exalted silence of meditation (மோனம்) clarifies into pristine awareness, revealing that Sivayanama is nothing other than the luminous, undivided Self.

Verse 370

  4. 4Mulariaala yamgadandhu muulanaadi uudupom.

The song turns to a direct instruction of the body. Seat the root fire in the lotus posture. Raise it by the wind. Take the five gates and the channel. Fix the ending seal. With the staff of the root vina, cross the lotus temple and pass through the root channel. The print splits the words for the seal and for the temple, but the actions are a single passage from seat to channel.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers an unequivocal, technical masterclass in internal Kundalini and Vasi yoga. Assuming the classical lotus posture (பத்மாசனம்) to steady the physical frame, the yogi kindles the dormant primordial serpent-fire slumbering at the perineal base (மூல அனல் / Muladhara Agni). Harnessing the vital breath (மாருதம் / Prana-Vayu) and applying the esoteric locks and seals (முத்திரை / bandhas), the nine bodily apertures (வாசல் ஐந்து நாலும் = nine gates) are firmly closed to prevent the leakage of psychic energy. Channeled directly up the central spinal column (மூல வீணாதண்டு / Sushumna / Merudanda), the fiery current pierces through the successive lotus temples of the six chakras (முளரி ஆலயம்), ascending through the root nadi to merge into the infinite at the cranial crown.

Verse 371

  1. 1Adidhodakki mudiyalavum aarumaa nilamgadandhu
  2. 2Appuraththil veligadandha aadhiengal sodhiyai
  3. 3Udupadhikkan amudharundhi unmaignaana uvagaiyul
  4. 4Uchchipattu iranguginra yoginalla yogiyee.

The climb is measured from the foot to the crown, across six lands, and then past the open, to our flame that is the beginning. In the moon, nectar is drunk, inside the joy of true knowledge. The one who does this touches the crown and comes down, and the line calls that one the good yogi. Ascent is praised by the descent that follows it. The good yogi is the one who returns.

The teaching

Ascending from the lowest root chakra (அடி / Muladhara) to the summit of the crown (முடி / Sahasrara), the accomplished adept traverses the six great planes of subtle existence (ஆறு மாநிலம் / the six chakras). Piercing beyond all dimensional realms into the transcendent open void, the seeker communes directly with the primordial Flame of Consciousness Drinking deeply of the immortal lunar ambrosia (அமுது) cascading from the crescent moon of the cranium (உடுபதி / Chandra mandala), the yogi is saturated with the bliss of authentic divine gnosis (உண்மை ஞான உவகை). Sivavakkiyar declares that the true Yogi (நல்ல யோகி) is not one who merely escapes into a trance, but the master who ascends to the crown, imbibes the divine nectar, and descends to infuse and transform every fiber of their physical embodiment.

Verse 372

  4. 4Kallavaasalaith thirandhu kaanaveendum maandharee.

Someone is asking where the gathered life stands, inside or outside, and is saying that you should come softly, draw near, and put a question. The singer quotes that careful habit and then gives the condition that matters: when what is within and what is born match, that matching is the sound. People are told to open the hidden gate and see. The soft question is answered by an opening.

The teaching

Scholars and curious seekers approach timidly, endlessly debating whether the ultimate resting place of the vital soul resides within the interior self or in an external transcendent realm. Sivavakkiyar cuts through their scholastic hesitation: the divine cannot be compartmentalized into "inside" or "outside." When the inward inhalation and outward exhalation are equalized in the neutral equilibrium of Sushumna, the unstruck celestial resonance (நாதம்) spontaneously rings forth. Instead of wasting mortal existence in academic controversies, human beings must unlock the secret, hidden portal (கள்ள வாசல் / the subtle third-eye gateway) through yogic focus and directly perceive the living reality for themselves.

Verse 373

Release and special powers are called a nuisance to the form that is locked in embrace. The five senses that arose as something else are named, and then a compressed phrase points at that other sense. The names to keep are the lord, the eternal one, and the poison-throated one. By love, every day, they are to be uttered in the heart until they are known and taken in. Chanting here is inward, and the grand prizes are the burden.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar boldly proclaims that seeking miraculous occult powers (சித்திகள்) and formal theological concepts of liberation (முக்தி) are mere distractions and burdens (தொந்தம்) that obstruct the soul's intimate, loving embrace with the indwelling Divine (முயங்குகின்ற மூர்த்தி). The five senses, which habitually drag consciousness outward into phenomenal distractions, must be collected and transmuted into a single focused faculty of inward contemplation. With heartfelt devotion (அன்பு), the seeker must daily meditate upon the Supreme Father (அத்தர்), the Deathless Eternal One (நித்தர்), and the Blue-throated Lord (காளகண்டர் / Nilakantha), who consumes the poison of cosmic illusion. This holy name is not to be shouted in noisy rituals, but silently uttered and deeply realized within the sanctuary of the heart.
