Someone is asking where the gathered life stands, inside or outside, and is saying that you should come softly, draw near, and put a question. The singer quotes that careful habit and then gives the condition that matters: when what is within and what is born match, that matching is the sound. People are told to open the hidden gate and see. The soft question is answered by an opening.

The teaching

Scholars and curious seekers approach timidly, endlessly debating whether the ultimate resting place of the vital soul resides within the interior self or in an external transcendent realm. Sivavakkiyar cuts through their scholastic hesitation: the divine cannot be compartmentalized into "inside" or "outside." When the inward inhalation and outward exhalation are equalized in the neutral equilibrium of Sushumna, the unstruck celestial resonance (நாதம்) spontaneously rings forth. Instead of wasting mortal existence in academic controversies, human beings must unlock the secret, hidden portal (கள்ள வாசல் / the subtle third-eye gateway) through yogic focus and directly perceive the living reality for themselves.

Release and special powers are called a nuisance to the form that is locked in embrace. The five senses that arose as something else are named, and then a compressed phrase points at that other sense. The names to keep are the lord, the eternal one, and the poison-throated one. By love, every day, they are to be uttered in the heart until they are known and taken in. Chanting here is inward, and the grand prizes are the burden.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar boldly proclaims that seeking miraculous occult powers (சித்திகள்) and formal theological concepts of liberation (முக்தி) are mere distractions and burdens (தொந்தம்) that obstruct the soul's intimate, loving embrace with the indwelling Divine (முயங்குகின்ற மூர்த்தி). The five senses, which habitually drag consciousness outward into phenomenal distractions, must be collected and transmuted into a single focused faculty of inward contemplation. With heartfelt devotion (அன்பு), the seeker must daily meditate upon the Supreme Father (அத்தர்), the Deathless Eternal One (நித்தர்), and the Blue-throated Lord (காளகண்டர் / Nilakantha), who consumes the poison of cosmic illusion. This holy name is not to be shouted in noisy rituals, but silently uttered and deeply realized within the sanctuary of the heart.

Verse 374

Three and two are counted so as to make five, and as that five a god strove and rose. The same count is how the whole world strove. Mother who bore and father are then the moving sound. With the one letter that appears, there is no further speaking left. The arithmetic is the letter-count this stretch of song keeps circling, and it ends by emptying speech down to a single character.

The teaching

The cosmic arithmetic of three plus two equaling five is the metaphysical matrix of the universe. It constitutes both the celestial pantheon of gods (தேவர்) and the entire phenomenal macrocosm (உலகெலாம்), representing the five gross elements and the sacred Five Syllables (Na-Ma-Si-Va-Ya). The divine cosmic parents—Mother Shakti, who manifests energy and form, and Father Shiva, who is formless awareness—incessantly vibrate throughout creation as the living unstruck sound (நாதம்). When the practitioner realizes that all these fivefold dimensions collapse into the Single Imperishable Letter (the Ekakshara / Pranava), all vocal speech and philosophical propositions cease completely, leaving only the profound stillness of absolute non-dual communion.

The open is melted, and with it the five letters and the joining of drop and sound. Curd is melted, ghee is mixed in, and the mixture becomes the purity of all. After the two are known, both in the open and in that deed, a nature that has crossed the open makes Sivayama clear. The cooking images are the method. Clarity arrives once the pair is known and the open has been gone beyond.

The teaching

The Divine Light established within the sacred science of primal letters (the Ekakshara / Pranava) remains hidden from ordinary mortals who merely recite phonetics without inward awakening. Sivavakkiyar refutes the notion that this mature, fully ripened Flame of gnosis spontaneously arose from sheer nothingness (பாழ் / the void); rather, it is the eternal, uncreated reality. It is the flourishing, abundantly rich Light of pure consciousness that completely defies verbal articulation (செப்பவொண்ணாச் சோதி). When firmly anchored and realized in the deepest core of the practitioner's being (அழுத்தறிந்து), this very Light expands to encompass and sustain the entire macrocosm (அண்டம்), revealing that the universe and the inner self are one continuous field of divine radiance.

The people addressed have learned mantras and are lost in them. The singer asks whether, at the time of death, they will still be able to say those mantras. The mantras are inside them, and they themselves, who prized the mantras, are inside as well. What a mantra actually comes to is the five letters of the mind. Learning stored in the mouth is measured against a death in which the mouth stops, and against letters that live in the mind.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar establishes the seamless correspondence between the macrocosm (அண்டம்) and the human microcosm (பிண்டம்). The vast universe is continuously animated by the beginningless Source (அனாதியான மூலம்), just as the physical body is sustained by the subtle resonance of the singular vital breath (பிராணன் / Vasi). The throat center (கண்டம் / Vishuddhi) vibrates with unstruck sound; but once the yogi penetrates beyond it to discover the celestial mansion of the cranium (கபால வீடு / Sahasrara), the upward journey through the spinal column (தண்டம் / Merudanda / Sushumna) reaches its divine culmination (சமைந்தது). All cosmic structures, bodily conduits, and mental efforts dissolve into the living, self-existent realization of Sivayanama.

Past the three sides, the line enters the deed of the three-eyed one. Inside the consciousness-supreme, a rising flood is Sivayam, and Sivayam is the five letters. After the self-supreme has risen and become the pillar everywhere, this side shrinks and runs, and what it becomes is the linga everywhere. The letters, the pillar, and the mark are one spreading. The question about shrinking answers itself in the same line.

The teaching

Transcending the three cities (முப்புரம்)—symbolizing the three gunas, the three states of consciousness (waking, dream, deep sleep), and the three bodies (gross, subtle, causal)—the practitioner enters the realm of the Three-Eyed Lord (முக்கண்ணன் / Shiva), who annihilates all illusion. Within the supreme space of pure consciousness (சிற்பரம்), the sacred Five Letters (Sivayanama) spring forth as an inexhaustible, surging fountain of divine life. When the transcendent Self (தற்பரம்) dawns, it stands as the immovable, cosmic Pillar of Light (தாணு / Lingodbhava) sustaining all existence. All external distractions and dualities collapse on this earthly plane, leaving only the omnipresent Linga of pure Being filling the entire cosmos.
