On a tree that is sound and fine you cut the heads of images, and on a branch that has no fullness you make a wooden sandal for the foot. The tree is destroyed in the making. The other way is a look. If you can seek the one who shines inside you and actually see, then this impurity, the three impurities, and any impurity at all are simply not what they were. The verse spends no time sorting the three. It cancels the whole pile at once.
The teaching
Sivavakkiyar uses a brilliant parable of timber craft to expose the arbitrary nature of external religious rituals. From the sturdy trunk of a fine living tree, human carpenters cut and carve the sacred head of an idol to install in a shrine for reverent worship; yet from the selfsame tree's lesser branch, they fashion wooden sandals (பாதக்குறடு) to be trampled underfoot. The living wood is cut and destroyed in both cases, proving that the sanctity of the idol and the lowliness of the shoe are mere human projections. Turning the seeker toward the true sanctuary, the Siddha proclaims that if one can only direct the inner vision to perceive the Radiant Lord shining within (நும்முளே விளங்குவோனை நாடி நோக்க வல்லீரேல்), all impurities—the triple stains of ego (ஆணவம்), karma (கன்மம்), and cosmic illusion (மாயை)—instantly dissolve into nothingness, revealing the soul's innate purity.
