The address grows tender. You are the ways of right conduct, the universe, the eight directions, every kind of skill, and the mind of the people who search. You are sleep, you are awareness, and you are the light mixed in. The last line asks rather than declares. The anklet cannot really be forgotten, and if it is forgotten anyway, still come and take up house. Dwelling is what the singer wants from the one who is already all of that.

The teaching

A breathtaking expression of non-dual devotion (அபேத பக்தி) that reconciles transcendence and immanence. God is not an object to be reached; He is the cosmic law (அறம்), the boundless universe, the varied paths of seeking, and the very consciousness of the seeker. Furthermore, He spans the paradox of human experience—abiding equally as the darkness of deep sleep (உறக்கம்) and the illumination of waking awareness (உணர்வு), existing as the light woven into every cell of our being. Acknowledging human imperfection, Sivavakkiyar makes the ultimate mystical surrender: even if the fragile human mind should momentarily lapse into forgetfulness, the Lord's omnipresent grace is implored to take up permanent residence in the soul.

Verse 61

The same you continues: cosmos, the boundless, the primal root, then the fragment, the thought, and the poems themselves. The fortunate are those who realize this inside the lotus. The last cry will not settle into simple praise. The straightness they hold is called a form that has been put on, and its keenness is questioned: what keenness is that keenness? A truth seen in the lotus and a righteousness worn as costume share one frame.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar ascends to the pinnacle of Advaitic realization, declaring the Divine to be simultaneously the manifest universe (அண்டம்), the unmanifest infinity (அகண்டம்), the primordial ground of being (ஆதிமூலம்), the finite fragments of reality (கண்டம்), the subjective mind (கருத்து), and the poetic expressions that sing of Him (காவியம்). The truly blessed (புண்ணியர்) are not those performing temple rites, but the mystics who perceive this all-encompassing reality within the secret lotus of the spiritual heart (புண்டரீகம்). The unwavering integrity and supreme spiritual acumen (கூர்மை) of such realized souls pierces through every cosmic illusion, abiding in unshakeable truth.

Eyes thick with kohl make a daze, and that daze is the setting of the first half. In it you are pictured as people who have passed the five and now sit without pain. That picture is not the promise. The promise comes only if a mind that has known the truth reaches knowledge that shines. Then the way of being saved is known, and the life lasts an age. Long life belongs to that mind, not to the pose inside the daze.

The teaching

A stark exposure of spiritual self-delusion. Sivavakkiyar chides those worldly householders and pseudo-ascetics who remain hopelessly bewitched by carnal lust and sensory attachments (the dark-kohled glances of women), while foolishly flattering themselves that they have mastered the five senses (ஐ) and are above sorrow. Such complacency is mere fantasy. True liberation and deathlessness (ஊழிகாலம் வாழ்வீர்) cannot be gained through casual wishful thinking; it demands the awakening of authentic spiritual wisdom (விளங்குஞானம்) through rigorous contemplation of the subtle reality (மெய்), transmuting mortal consciousness into the deathless Siddha state.

The people addressed are mutes, shaken by the door where a child was. A guru has come and spoken, and the skill asked is to look at that word on purpose. They stand as a body in which form is locked like a beast, and they stand as the high ones too. If the word is really looked at, there is a going and a joining into the body where holy light shines. Birth's door is the trouble. The spoken word is the turn.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar addresses spiritually unconscious humanity as "mutes" (ஊமைகாள்)—souls struck dumb and helpless by the trauma of repeated births through the vaginal gate of the womb (கருவிருந்த வாசல்). The physical body born of flesh is like a beast's frame (உருவிலங்கு மேனி), and even attaining the status of heavenly devas (உம்பர்) remains within the cycle of samsara. The only exit from this perpetual trap is meditative absorption in the guru's initiatory instruction (குரு சொன்ன வார்த்தை / the mahavakya or secret pranava). By aligning one's awareness with this inner guidance, the practitioner transmutes the mortal physical sheath into the radiant, divinized body of light (திருவிளங்கு மேனி / Pranava deham), attaining immortal union with the Supreme.

Wretches go searching because they have been told they must bathe in holy water. They are asked to say, clearly, where that bathing is. The holy water is what you are, once you have stayed inside and grown clear. After that staying, what counts as holy water is the five letters of Sivaya. The pilgrimage bath is answered by being moved into the letters. The seekers still think the water is somewhere they have not reached.

The teaching

One of Sivavakkiyar's most famous and trenchant attacks on religious ritualism. Pilgrims trek vast distances in hardship to plunge into external rivers and temple tanks, foolishly believing that washing outer dirt washes away karmic sins. The Siddha mocks their spiritual poverty (தீனர்காள்) and demands they define where true holiness resides. The real sacred water (தீர்த்தம்) is not a muddy river on the earth; it is the inner nectar of pure consciousness and the amrita that flows from the sahasrara during deep yogic absorption. When the mind attains pristine stillness within, the seeker discovers that the ultimate cleansing river is the continuous internal resonance of the Five Letters (சிவாயநம).

Verse 65

  4. 4Ezhuththilaa enazhuththilo irukkalaam irundhumee.

The neck is straightened and a good eye is opened, the posture of someone trying hard to see. What ripened, gaped, and left is called a sin, and the sin is mocked. Then the posture is left behind. In a seed pressed firm there is something without beginning. The last line is compressed. It may sit in a letter, or in this letter; it may remain, and it does remain. The beginningless one is left in the seed, with a certainty that follows a maybe.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar skewers those practitioners who adopt elaborate outward yogic postures—stiffening the neck, fixing the eyeballs in external gazing—while their spiritual essence rots and their lives drain away in ignorance and open-mouthed vanity True yoga does not consist of physical gymnastics or theatrical poses. Deep within the core of existence lies the firmly anchored primordial seed (அழுத்தமான வித்து), home to the beginningless, timeless Source (அனாதி). Whether experienced as the silent, unwritten Void (எழுத்திலா) or embodied in the sacred syllable, that eternal Reality is already present within the practitioner—waiting not for physical posturing, but for authentic internal realization.
