Sivaya is the syllable, and the syllable in which Shiva is. It is also the true syllable for anyone who trusts what is called a means. The breath has already gone past a door with no panels, a gate nothing can shut. The five letters do not describe that breath from far away. They put a means to work and call it back. Recitation here is a summons to wind that has crossed the door.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar reveals the secret of Vasi yoga and the therapeutic power of the Panchakshara. The five syllables of "Sivaya" are not an empty verbal formula; they are the vibrational body of Shiva Himself The human body has nine open orifices—doors without panels (கபாடமற்ற வாசல்)—through which the vital prana perpetually leaks out into the external world, causing dissipation, aging, and death. Sivavakkiyar reveals that the rhythmic, internal repetition of the five letters of Sivaya is the sovereign yogic device (உபாயம்) that reins in, tames, and draws the escaped breath back into the central channel, stabilizing consciousness in the heart of Shivam.

It is not form, not space, and not something standing by having settled on one thing. The door it comes near is not a possession, not some other thing, and not a mere ceasing. It is not large, not small, and not what has turned into speech. What stands after that clearing is a straightness that has become the rare thing. Who is able to see it? The refusals exist so the question can be honest.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a breathtaking apophatic (Neti-Neti / negation) declaration of the Nirguna Absolute, reminiscent of the Upanishadic Mandukya and Avadhuta Gita. The supreme Reality transcends all conceptual dualities: it cannot be localized as a physical form (உருவம்), nor dismissed as a bare vacuum (வெளி), nor objectified as dependent on anything else. It is beyond dimensions—neither colossal nor minuscule—and evades the grasp of human language and philosophical speculation. This pristine, unbending, and subtle Reality (அரியதாகி நின்ற நேர்மை) resides beyond all mental constructs; Sivavakkiyar asks who among mortal men possesses the silent, transcendental eye capable of directly witnessing this unconditioned Truth.

Verse 74

  4. 4Viikkavandha yogigaal? viraindhuraikka veenumee!

Four questions, and no answers. Is the self without beginning? Is the non-self? Are the five senses that have flowered, and the fields they open on? Are the books thick with argument, and is Sadashiva beginningless with them? The people asked are yogis, and the printed address is tight: they have come in a swelling, and they must speak at once. Sadashiva is not allowed to sit safely above the senses and the books.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar interrogates the foundational metaphysical assumptions of orthodox philosophies (Advaita, Dvaita, and Saiva Siddhanta). Scholars and dogmatic yogis argue endlessly about what is eternal and beginningless (அனாதி)—some claiming the individual soul is co-eternal with God, others positing primordial matter, sensory organs, or scriptures. Sivavakkiyar pierces through this pedantic arrogance, daring swollen, self-important yogis (வீக்கவந்த யோகிகாள்) to solve this ontological paradox: if Sadashiva is the sole uncaused beginningless Source, how can scriptures, debate, and the apparatus of sensory perception claim equal antiquity? The Siddha shatters the pretense of intellectual dialectic, demonstrating that the Absolute transcends all scholastic categories of time and origin.

Verse 75

  4. 4Arivilaadha maandharodu anugumaaradhu engnganee?

Agamas are recited from outside knowledge, and on the path the one straightness is missed. The printed verb there is compressed. Then a picture does the work. Curd already hangs in the pot at home, and someone enters the town looking for butter. How can one draw near people with no knowledge who live that way? The butter is sought abroad while it hangs in one's own pot. The Agamas are that trip into town.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar delivers a devastating critique of bookish orthodoxy and externalized scriptural pedantry. Priests and scholars memorize and chant the Agamas with verbal fluency, yet remain utterly divorced from living inner awareness (அறிவிலே புறந்திருந்து). Bewildered by sectarian doctrines and convoluted rites, they miss the direct, uncomplicated truth of the Divine. Sivavakkiyar employs the unforgettable folk metaphor of a person having rich curd hanging right in the kitchen sling (உறி), yet roaming door-to-door through the village begging for butter. The Divine Self is already present within the seeker's own heart; those who ignore this inner reality to search for God in outer temples and distant dogmas are hopelessly foolish, making meaningful spiritual dialogue with them impossible.

Verse 76

  4. 4Thiruarangam enruniir thelindhirukka valliiree!

These lines stand at the state of love, and they will not let love be two people whose halls happen to meet. Even then the bone did not melt, and the looking did not happen. A truth stands as the hall of form and is not heeded. Imagination stands as the hall of the womb and has to be crossed. After that, a person can stay clear and say the sacred hall. Love, under this name, is that clarity.

The teaching

Titled 'The State of Love' (அன்பு நிலை), this verse redefines devotion and love beyond biological lust and outer pilgrimage. Ordinary mortals engage in physical copulation (இருவர் அரங்கம் பொருந்தி), mistaking carnal union for love, without ever experiencing the ego-melting ecstasis of the soul (என்புருகி நோக்கிலீர்). They fail to discern the singular divine Truth that animates every form in this cosmic theater (உருவரங்கம்). Sivavakkiyar urges the seeker to transcend the lower reproductive arena—the theater of the womb and its karmic fantasies (கரு அரங்கம்)—and attain the supreme clarity of consciousness. In that awakened state, one realizes that the true 'Tiruvarangam' (sacred stage) is not an external temple in Srirangam, but the sanctified internal arena where the Divine eternally communes with the soul.

Verse 77

  1. 1Karukkuzhiyil aasaiyaayk kaadhalutru nirkiriir
  2. 2Kurukkidukkum eezhaigaal kulaavuginra paavigaal
  3. 3Thiruththiruththi meyyinaal sivandhaagn sezhuththaiyum
  4. 4Urukkazhikkum ummaiyum unarndhunarndhu kollumee.

Desire stands in the pit of the womb and calls itself love. The people there are poor ones under a guru's pressure, and sinners at their sport. Against that pit the lines set the five letters reddened by the body, and the you that form itself strips away. Knowing has to happen twice, until it is taken. Lust in the place of birth, and letters that grow red in the body, are the two stands one is choosing between.

The teaching

Sivavakkiyar confronts humanity's obsessive enslavement to carnal reproduction. Mortals burn with lust for the vaginal chasm (கருக்குழி), mistaking transient hormonal infatuation for true love, while living in spiritual poverty under the oppressive dogmas of mercenary gurus. The Siddha offers the antidote of internal alchemy: by persistently refining and transmuting the physical body (மெய்யினால் திருத்திருத்தி) through yogic practice, the sacred Five Letters (Panchakshara) ignite like a glowing crimson flame of pure Shivam. Through this double realization—witnessing the inner divine vibration and recognizing the transient nature of mortal form (உருக்கழிக்கும் உம்மை)—the soul breaks free from the womb's trap and attains spiritual liberation.
